Golden Bears drop two games in Arkansas to open 2013

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (0-2) opened the 2013 season with a pair of losses at the 7-State Classic, falling 7-0 in the opener to Northwest Missouri State before a 7-4 loss to Ouachita Baptist in the second game of the day.

GAME 1: NW Missouri State 7, Concordia-St. Paul 0
Senior right hander Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) recorded four strikeouts in the first inning but allowed three runs with two outs in the third inning and hit a three run homer with two outs in the fourth inning in a 4-run inning. She went the distance in the game, with six of the seven runs being scored against her with two outs.  She shutout the Bearcats for the final three innings and finished the day allowing seven runs in seven innings, striking out eight.

The offense couldn't get going in response, with just three hits and drawing only one walk against Jenna Creger. She went the distance, striking out seven in the shutout.

Concordia's three hits came from the top of the lineup and all were singles. Freshman Jamie Fleischhacker (Maplewood, Minn.) went 2-for-2 with a walk from the leadoff spot in her career debut, but was caught stealing twice, the first time at third base in the first inning and the second time at second base in the third inning.

Concordia's only other baserunner in the game was Alicia Meiser's (Circle Pines, Minn.) bunt single to follow Fleischhacker in the first inning in Concordia's biggest threat of the game.

GAME 2: Ouachita Baptist 7, Concordia-St. Paul 4
Concordia led 2-0 in game two entering the fifth inning before OBU produced a 7-run top of the fifth. Concordia scored two more in the fifth, and had the tying run at the plate or on base each of the final three innings.

Meiser went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Brynn Larsen (Oconto Falls, Wis.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base and Bekah Roth (Shoreview, Minn.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year. She went the distance, pitching all seven innings while allowing seven runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.

Concordia returns to the field tomorrow with a noon game against Southwestern Oklahoma State and a 2 p.m. game against Southwest Baptist.
