ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University soccer team (5-12, 4-10 NSIC) dropped a 1-0 decision to the Winona State Warriors (13-2-2, 12-2-0 NSIC) on Senior Night at Sea Foam Stadium.
Hadley Bales broke a 0-0 tie in the 67th minute to give the Warriors the decisive advantage after senior goalkeeper Kayla Kuczaboski kept the team in it for much of the evening. Kuczaboski stood up to a tough test by the Warriors, as WSU had a 15-2 advantage in shots with the senior keeper making seven saves on the night.
Concordia honored their five seniors (Kate Fox, Kaylyn Rae Smith, Brittany Kapala, Kayla Kuczaboski and Chloe Moore) at halftime with a special ceremony for their final game at Sea Foam Stadium.
The first half was all WSU with Winona State outshooting the Golden Bears 8-1 in the first 45. Kuczaboski blanked the Warriors, making three saves to keep the game scoreless.
Play continued in the Warriors offensive end in the second half with WSU outshooting CU 7-1 for a seemingly decisive 15-2 total for the game despite Concordia limiting WSU to few solid chances at goals.
But with just over 23 minutes remaining in regulation Hadley Bales took a feed from Nicole Sames on the left side of the net and crossed it back into the upper right corner of the net to put Winona State on the scoreboard. Alaina Kne also picked up an assist on the play.
Concordia had a pair of late chances by Liz Darkow and Taryn MacMillan but couldn't put anything in the net as the Warriors held on for the 1-0 victory and their 13th win of the season.
Although Concordia held strong possession and frustrated the Warriors for extended parts of the contest, WSU keeper Alexandra Vial was barely tested, making two saves on the only two shots of the night to pick up her ninth shutout of the season.
The 2013 Golden Bears have played toe-to-toe with a number of the league's top teams in the standings, often coming a goal shy of the opposition. The team has had eight one-goal defeats on the season and looks to finish the season strong on Sunday on the road against another upper-standings NSIC squad, at Upper Iowa at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Fayette.
