Late goal gives U-Mary 2-1 win over Golden Bears

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University soccer team (3-6-0, 2-4-0) dropped a hard fought match with the University of Mary Marauders (2-6-1, 2-3-1) with a 2-1 decision on Friday night at Sea Foam Stadium.  Alahna Anderson (White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored her team high third goal of the year in the losing effort.  Concordia is now 0-11-1 all-time against the Marauders.

U-Mary jumped on the Golden Bears early with a goal just 6:48 into the game to go ahead 1-0.  Michelle McGeary intercepted a bad pass from a Golden Bears defender and snuck one past goalie Emma Gartner (Springdale, Ark.) into the back of the net.  Concordia battled back to even the score at one in the 25th minute when Anderson picked up a rebound off of a Kaylyn Rae Smith (Dekalb, Ill. ) shot coming from a corner from Emily Ecklund (Elk River, Minn. ) from right out in front of the net.  Neither team would add anything for the rest of the half and went to intermission tied at 1.  CU outshot U-Mary in the first half 8-6, but the Marauders were more efficient in getting five of those shots on net compared to three for the Golden Bears.

Play went back and forth with neither team seizing control for much of the second half and the game looked to be headed for overtime before Alex Bachman-Williams headed a beautful cross into the the top right corner of the goal in the 79th minute to give the Marauders the deciding goal.  CU was unable to answer in the game's final minutes.

Sophomore goalie Emma Gartner fell to 1-5 on the season despite holding an impressive 1.17 goals against average.

Concordia is back in action this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as they play host the the Minot State Beavers.
