Golden Bears drop heartbreaker to Bulldogs Friday night

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University soccer team (4-9-0, 3-7-0 NSIC) lost a heartbreaking 2-1 match in double overtime to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (10-2-0, 9-1-0) on Friday night at Sea Foam Stadium.  A Jennifer Smith goal with 4:13 remaining in the second overtime was the deciding factor.  UMD is now 16-0-1 all-time against CU.

Concordia jumped ahead 1-0 just 55 seconds into the game on a beautiful header from Kaylyn Rae Smith off a corner from Emily Ecklund.  The goal was Smith's first of the season and gave a much needed offensive boost.  After the goal, play shifted to the other side of the field with the Bulldogs dominating possession for the rest of the half.  Goalie Emma Gartner stopped all three shots she faced in the half as Minnesota Duluth outshot Concordia 8-3 in the half.  The Golden Bears still held onto the one goal advantage going into the half.

The second half continued much in the same way with UMD on the attack.  Sally Stromme nearly tied the score in the 48th minute and put a shot off the crossbar but the Bulldogs were unable to put it in the back of the net.  Concordia's defense did a great job of keeping the ball away from the net, only allowing one shot on goal in the half.  Unfortunately for CU, that one shot was Maureen Stormont's 12th goal of the year in the 61st minute.  Stormont received a pass from Hannah Keil and was left all alone to put it home.  Stormont came within inches of picking up her second goal of the game in the 77th minute on her own shot off the crossbar.  Neither team was able to get much going after that and the game went into overtime.

The first overtime proved to be uneventful with neither team getting anything on net.  The second overtime appeared to be headed in the same direction before Jennifer Smith buried a shot from about 20 yards out on the right side of the net into the upper left corner past Gartner.  Smith's goal sent the UMD bench storming out on the field to celebrate the win.

Concordia will look to bounce back with a home game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with St. Cloud State coming to town.  The webcast can be found on cugoldenbears.com.watch.
