Volleyball back on track, tops MSU Moorhead 3-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After a disappointing upset on Tuesday night, the No. 2 Concordia University volleyball team got back to its winning ways Friday night with a 3-0 shutout over No. 19 MSU Moorhead by scores of 25-15, 25-9 and 25-13. Concordia improves to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC, while the Dragons fall to 9-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.

The Golden Bears were firing on all cylinders, hitting at a .516 attack percentage, while four players tallied double digit kills – Ellie Duffy (Fridley, Minn.) (13), Cassie Haag (Plymouth, Minn.) (13), Katie Habeck (Farmington, Minn.) (11) and Kara Pioske (Waconia, Minn.) (11). Pioske also notched a double-double with a game-high 14 digs. Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn.) posted 47 assists for a 15.7 set average.

MSU Moorhead started the first set with a service error giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead – a lead they never gave up. The Dragons hung around throughout the beginning of the set and trailed by three at 13-10, but CU then went on a 5-to-1 run to take a comfortable 18-11 lead. The Golden Bears claimed seven of the last 11 points for the 25-15 win. They hit at a .486 attack percentage with 20 kills on 35 attempts (three errors). Konetchy served up 18 assists.

The second set was dominated by Concordia all the way through. They Bears connected on 16-of-29 attempts without an error for a game-high .552 attack rate.

The Dragons took their first lead of the match with the first point in the third set. There were five scoring ties and three lead changes in the first 10 points, but a kill by Pioske gave the Golden Bear a 6-5 lead that they never gave up the rest of the night. The offense proved to dominant once again as CU hit at a .516 attack percentage (18-2-31).

Concordia will take on Northern State on Saturday afternoon in another NSIC tilt. The Golden Bears and Wolves are set to begin play at 4:00 p.m.
