Soccer ties Bemidji State 2-2

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University soccer team tied Bemidji State 2-2 on Saturday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium. The Golden Bears scored a goal in the first and another in the second, but allowed two unanswered goals and neither team could find the back of the net in the two overtime periods. CU moves to 1-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the NSIC, while the Beavers - who are ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Central Region - move to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the league.

On just the second shot of the game for Concordia, Brittany Kapala (Fridley, Minn.) netted her first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead at the 28:55 mark. Kapala was on the receiving end of a pass from the left side by Kristi Loobeek (New Hope, Minn.) for the header.

The score remained 1-0 at the break but it didn't take long for the Golden Bears to strike again as Jess Bianchi (Rogers, Minn.) tallied her first career goal wearing the Navy and Gold just :31 into the period. Bianchi was in the right place at the right time, scoring on a loose ball in front of the goal on a rebound. Amanda Olsen (Cottage Grove, Minn.) recorded the assist.

Nearly as quick as the Bears took a 2-0 lead, the Beavers responded to cut the deficit to one. Abigail Nyquist nailed a deep shot from outside the box at the 46:45 mark. Each team took two shots over the ensuing 34 minutes until a penalty inside the Golden Bears box awarded a penalty kick to the visitors. Tiffany VanHaaften took the shot and scored the game-tying goal. The game then was forced into overtime.

The Bears nearly won the game in the last second of the first overtime as Arielle Stimson (Lakeville, Minn.) fired a shot on goal as time expired, but it deflected off the crossbar.

In the second overtime, CU outshot the Beavers 3-to-1, but it amounted to nothing and the game ended at 2-2.

As the final score would indicate, the match-up was evenly played. CU edged Bemedji 19-to-15 on shots, but the Beavers had 11 shots on goal compared to seven by the Golden Bears.

Kayla Kuczaboski (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) played the entire 110:00 between the pipes with nine saves. Her counterpart, Sonja Barr, also went the complete game with five saves.

Concordia returns to the Sea Foam pitch Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for another NSIC match-up against Minnesota, Crookston.
