Stimson’s hat trick leads Golden Bears over Waldorf 4-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University soccer team hosted its home-opener Wednesday night at Sea Foam Stadium and recorded its first win of the season, defeating Waldorf College 4-0. Arielle Stimson (Lakeville, Minn. ) put on a show for the Golden Bears, posting a hat trick with her first three goals of the season. CU improves to 1-3 overall, while the Warriors fall to 1-3-3.

To start the game, it was Chloe Moore (Lakeville, Minn. ) providing the offense for Concordia in the 13th minute. Moore put in a nice header from out front after a corner kick by Amanda Olsen (Cottage Grove, Minn. ). Jess Bianchi (Rogers, Minn.) was also credited with the assist on what proved to be the game-winner.

Stimson scored her first goal at the 22:43 mark with the help of Moore. The goal was scored from right in front of the net. And in the 31st minute, Stimson found the back of the net on a nice pass from midfield into the box where she once again scored from right in front. Rachel Gratz (Eagan, Minn.) and Brittany Kapala (Fridley, Minn. ) posted the assists. The score remained 3-0 at the break.

After a first half that was clearly dominated by the Golden Bears, Waldorf responded by not allowing another goal for nearly 27 minutes until Stimson completed the hat trick in the 72nd minute. McKenzie Buck (Hudson, Wis.) lofted a pass from the left corner into the box where Stimson chipped it into the upper left corner of the net for a 4-0 lead.

Stimson tallied her second career hat trick and the eighth for CU dating back to 2003. Her first career hat trick came against Southwest Minnesota State in 2010.

She moves into third on the school's career points record list with 58 (22g, 14a), surpassing Lindsay Hartleben's 56 (16g, 24a, 2002-05). She trails second place Hillary Johnson (27g, 13a, 2004-07) by nine points. Her 22 career goals and 14 career assists are each third all-time.

Emma Gartner (Springdale, Ark.) started in goal for the Golden Bears, picking up the win with two saves. Kayla Kuczaboski (Vadnais Heights, Minn. ) took over in the second and tallied one save in the shutout.

Concordia fired a season-high 20 shots, 10 of which on goal, while holding the Warriors to just five shots. The Golden Bears also posted 11 corner kicks compared to only one for Waldorf.

CU continues its five-game home stand Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against Bemidji State.
