Augustana Uses HR's to take 1-0 Series Lead

SIOUX FALLS, S. D. - The Augustana Vikings (52-10) hit three homers, two from Janelle Trautmann as they beat Concordia (33-21) 9-3 in the first game of the best of three series on Friday afternoon. The Golden Bears had eight hits on the afternoon but stranded nine runners as timely hits did not plate runners. BOX SCORE | LISTEN LIVE | SUPER REGIONAL WEBSITE

Concordia got on the board first as Katie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn.) led off with an infield single. She moved up to second on a throwing error following a fly out to center and then scored as Erin Tjornhom (Eagan, Minn.) singled driving her in. Augustana had baserunner in the first but failed to score.

The Vikings tied it up in the bottom of the second with a single through the left side after CU failed to score after leading off the top of the second with a walk and double. The big inning was avoided when Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) picked up three straight outs with the bases loaded keeping the score 1-1.

Concordia took the lead back in the top of the third thanks to a one out double to left field by Calli Brennan (Mendota Heights, Minn.) scoring Alicia Meiser (Circle Pines, Minn.) who had reached via an error to start the inning. The lead did not last long as Augustana fired back with four runs in the bottom of the inning making it 5-2.

The fourth inning was scoreless for both teams as the no one had a hit in the inning. The Golden Bears drew within two in the fifth as Brennan picked up another RBI driving in pinch runner Jade Ptacek (Sioux Falls, S. D.). The Golden Bears left two runners on base to end the inning trailing 5-3. Concordia again left a pair on in the top of the sixth as CU could not get closer than two.

Augustana opened up a bigger lead in the bottom of the sixth as they hit two home runs and took a 9-3 lead in to the final inning. Concordia had a pair of runners reach but the game would end with Augustana winning 9-3.

Two stolen bases by CU gave them 101 on the season and are now one shy of tying the school record for most stolen bases in a single season. The Golden Bears will need to win back to back games tomorrow if they want to see this run continue to the Elite 8 in Louisville next week. Tomorrow's first game will be played at noon with the if necessary game scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
