#22 Augustana Sweeps CU as Leads Slip Away

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia (22-15, 7-7 NSIC) had upset on their minds on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon but it was not to be as #22 Augustana (35-6, 13-3 NSIC) swept them in a double header. Erin Tjornhom (Eagan, Minn.) had two homers, one in each game and Katie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn.) tied the career stolen base mark with her 101 steal in her career but it was not enough. CU fell 14-4 in game one and then lost a heartbreaker in game two 12-10 in eight inning. GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

GAME 1

The Augustana Vikings got a one single to left field starting the game but Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) worked around it getting a fielder's choice and a swinging strikeout. Katie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn.) led off with a home run to straight away center field giving CU a quick 1-0 lead. With one out Calli Brennan (Mendota Heights, Minn.) was hit by and pitch. The big hit followed as Erin Tjornhom (Eagan, Minn.) launched a ball over the fence in left putting CU up 3-0.

After a short rain delay the Vikings came up in the second and picked up home run to cut into the Golden Bears lead bringing them within one at 3-2. Concordia tried to rally with two outs but was unable to push across a run stranding runners on first and third. Augustana left a pair of runners on base as well in the top of the third as Kluever worked out of a jam. Concordia threatened again in the third but a double play ended the inning with Larsen out at third.

Augustana used the momentum after getting out of the jam in the third and put 10 batters up in the fourth inning scoring five runs on five hits. They got a two run homer to take a 4-3 lead and did not stop till the lead was 7-3. Concordia again lined into a double play to end a threat in the fourth inning. Anderson picked up 100th stolen base of her career in the inning.

The Vikings added three more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to extended the lead to 14-3. Concordia plated a run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI ground out from Meiser but that would be all they could do as they fell 14-4 to the #22 team in the nation.

GAME 2

In the top of the first inning AU got a leadoff double followed by sac bunt. Augustana used small ball effectively picking up a run on a single. Anderson kept her hot day at the plate alive, picking up a single through the right side. Meiser got hit on the next pitch to put runners on first and second. After a strikeout of Brennan, Anderson and Meiser completed a double steal with Tjornhom at the plate. It was Anderson's 101 first of her career tying Natalie Mast all-time school record. Just like the first game; Tjornhom turned on one and put CU up 3-1 on a homer to left field.

The Vikings got a run back using the same formula as inning one starting with a leadoff double, sac bunt and then a sac fly to center scoring the run. Concordia got a single in the bottom of the second inning but two fly outs ended the inning. AU tried to get a two rally started with back to back singles through the left side, but a fly out to shallow left field ending the rally.

Meiser was hit by the pitch to lead off the bottom of the third inning for Concordia. She stole second and scored as Tjornhom delivered once again for CU, doubling off the center field fence. Tjornhom was left on second but CU led 4-2 after three complete.

For the second straight game Augustana exploded for five runs on five hits in the fourth inning, using two homeruns a two run shot and three run shot to take a 7-4 lead after three and a half. Concordia left the bases loaded in their half of the fourth inning as the big hit eluded them.

Augustana got another two run homer from Matley Jones, her second in two innings as Augustana led 9-4 after four and a half. The Golden Bears battled back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tjornhom reached on a single and moved to second as the ball was kicked into right field. She then advanced on a wild pitch before Larsen singled to the pitcher. Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) singled up the middle scoring Tjornhom. Another wild pitch allowed runners to move up to second and third. Bekah Roth (Shoreview, Minn.) reached on an error scoring Larsen from third. Cassie Bertlesen (Oakdale, Minn.) singled to load the bases for CU. Tessa Ewert (Hutchinson, Minn.) had an RBI ground out to score M. Feuerbach. After a strikeout Meiser singled up the middle bringing home pitch hitter Megan Revoir (Hammond, Wis.) and Roth tying the game up at nine.

After a scoreless sixth inning for Augustana, the Golden Bears were able to take a 10-9 lead. Tjornhom doubled down the right field line and then scored on a huge two out hit by Roth to right field. The Vikings quickly tied it up in the in seventh with a leadoff homer to right center, their fourth home run of the game.

The Golden Bears had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh, as Anderson reached second after being hit by a pitch with one out. Brennan could not come through with a hit with two outs as Anderson was stuck on second.

In the extra frame Augustana got back to back hits just inside the right field line to put runners on second and third with nobody out. After an intentional walk back to back singles gave Augie the 12-10 lead that they kept as CU went down in order in the bottom of the eighth.
