ABERDEEN, S.D. - Concordia University (20-20, 11-15 NSIC) snapped out of their six game losing streak by picking up a 4-1 extra inning win (8-innings) in game one on Sunday afternoon at Fossum Field over host Northern State (15-26, 8-18). But in game two, the Wolves were able to salvage the split by winning the second of two pitcher's duels in a 3-2 contest. BOX SCORES: Game 1 | Game 2
The Golden Bears take three of four from the Wolves on the season series, as they swept a mid-March doubleheader at Metrodome as well. All four of the games played between the teams were low scoring and close. In the four games, Concordia out-scored Northern State 10-5 for an average of 2.5 to 1.25 runs per game.
Concordia now leads the all-time series 41-7 since the Golden Bears joined the NSIC and NCAA Division II in the 2000 baseball season, the first for head coach Mark "Lunch" McKenzie.
Game 1: CU 4, Northern State 1 (8)
Sophomore first baseman
Elliot Powell (Minnetonka, Minn.) made a potential game-saving catch leaning over the fence in foul territory with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh with a 1-1 tie score to send the game into extra innings.
Freshman
Kyle Dalton (Minnetonka, Minn.) led off the eighth with a single and would later score the go-ahead run on an error by Northern State's catcher which also allowed sophomore
Drew Turk (Plainfield, Ill.) to advance to second after initially reaching on a single. NSU elected to intentionally walk senior
Bryan Lippincott (Des Moines, Iowa) to put two runners on with senior
Logan Bouts (Hopkins, Minn.) providing the insurance with a 2-run double to center.
Junior left hander
Griff Kilber (Chanhassen, Minn.) picked up the win in relief of senior right hander
Chris Peterson (St. Anthony, Minn.). Kilber improves to 2-2 on the year by retiring all five batters he faced and pitching out of a bases loaded, one-out jam when he entered play in the seventh inning with a tie score - forcing NSU to leave all three runners aboard.
Peterson had a great pitching line for Concordia, working 6.1 innings and striking out five. He allowed one earned run on five hits with four walks allowed.
Robbie Rocamora pitched the 8-inning complete game for Northern State, allowing four earned runs and falling to 1-2. He allowed eight hits and a walk and struck out a pair.
Bouts led the Golden Bears by going 2-for-4 with three RBI along with his 11th double of the year. Turk went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and a stolen base.
Game 2: Northern State 3, CU 2
Concordia and Northern State traded runs in the first and second innings but the Wolves scratched together a pair of unearned runs in the third inning off of sophomore right hander
Adam Kramer (Wausau, Wis.) to take the advantage.
Kramer settled in from there as he didn't allow a hit the rest of the way while working the distance on the hill. In the last three innings, Kramer struck out five of the 10 batters. He finished pitching 6.0 innings, striking out six and allowing three runs (one earned) on just four hits.
But the Concordia offense couldn't produce for the victory. They left the bases loaded in the third inning and stranded the tying run on third base in the seventh inning.
Kramer falls to 2-3 on the season with the hard luck loss while his ERA improved to 4.02 on the season.
Clint Manzo improved to 2-6 as he picked up the win in relieft, pitching 4.1 innings while allowing just one run on two hits with five strikeouts to just one walk. He relieved starter Sean Winslow, who made it just 2.2 innings despite allowing one run. Winslow had loaded the bases with two outs in the third when Manzo came out of the bullpen to shut down the Concordia rally.
Senior catcher
Doug Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Concordia while senior
Kris Long (Rochester, Minn.) was also 2-for-3. Lippincott went 1-for-1 but was walked and hit by pitch in the loss and is now hitting .511 at the 40-game mark of the season. Lippincott also stole his eighth base but was also caught for the third time this year in the game.
Concordia will turn around and face Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday in Duluth, Minn. with a 1:00 p.m. scheduled doubleheader. Continue to visit the NSIC Standings as the Golden Bears chase down their first NSIC Tournament berth since their championship season in 2008.
