Lippincott's cycle helps Golden Bears to weekday split

LIPPINCOTT'S CYCLE HELPS GOLDEN BEARS TO A WEEKDAY SPLIT
Apr. 11–
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia University senior third baseman Bryan Lippincott (Des Moines, Iowa) went 5-for-5 with a walk while hitting for the cycle, driving in four runs to help the Golden Bears to a 15-7 game two victory over Upper Iowa (13-18, 9-7 NSIC) on Wednesday afternoon at Barnes Field. Upper Iowa won the first game, 8-2, as Lippincott went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. He finished with an 8-for-9 day at the plate with two singles, a double, two triples and a homer with five RBI and a stolen base. BOX SCORES: Game 1 | Game 2 | PHOTOS

In his career, Lippincott now has a 6-game home run streak (2010), a 28-game hitting streak (2011), an 84-hit season (2010) and now adds the cycle to his already sparkling collegiate resume'. With the two triple afternoon, Lippincott also breaks the school's career triples record with his 12th. He's already the career doubles leader, now with 59.

He enetered the day second in the nation in average (.528), on base percentage (.623) and slugging (.899). Today's performance increases his season marks to .561/.645/.980, while he also drew his 11th intentional walk of the year.

Game 1: Upper Iowa 8, CU 2
The Golden Bears jumped on the scoreboard early with a run in the first inning but squandered a bases loaded, 1-out rally with a fly out-throw out double play at the plate. Concordia got their run on an RBI triple by Lippincott.

Upper Iowa rallied for the lead in the third inning with a pair of RBI doubles and never looked back. They added one more in the fifth and a 5-run sixth inning.

Junior Greg Larpenter (Urbandale, Iowa) went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI batting in front of Lippincott as the two players combined for five hits and both RBI.

The loss went to senior right hander Ben Lemke (Rosemount, Minn.) who allowed seven runs in five innings. He struck out six and walked one in the performance while falling to 2-3.

Fabian Lopez got the win for Upper Iowa, improving to 1-2 with a complete game as he struck out five and walked five and allowed six hits.

The Peacocks used aggressive baserunning, stealing four times in as many chances, to aid in their victory.

Game 2: CU 15, Upper Iowa 7
The Golden Bears built an early 12-run lead by scoring five times in the second inning and seven times in the third inning. Lippincott had an RBI triple in the second and a 3-run homer in the third inning, collecting three hits and three parts of the cycle in the first three innings.

Larpenter added a 2-run single in the second inning, while junior right fielder Paul Giel (Minnetonka, Minn.) and sophomore left fielder Drew Turk (Plainfield, Ill.) each had 2-run singles down opposite lines in the third inning. Giel pulled his down the left field line while Turk hit his to the opposite field two batters later.

Turk would produce a 4-hit effort as he was inserted into the starting lineup in the second spot, hitting in front of Lippincott. He scored twice and drove in three and continues to surge at the plate with a .480 season average, also getting a hit in his only at bat in game one.

The Peacocks would rally with a 5-run fourth inning that chased Concordia starter Griff Kilber (Chanhassen, Minn.) from the game before he was able to become the pitcher of record. Kilber cruised through the first three innings, allowing three singles and an HBP but striking out four before running into trouble in the fourth.

He finished the day allowing five runs (three earned) on hits while striking out five over 3.2 innings.

Junior right hander Andy Fagely (Mahtomedi, Minn.) came on in relief and went the rest of the way to improve to 5-2 after earning the win. Fagely allowed two runs (one earned) over 5.1 innings. He struck out five without issuing any walks while allowing four hits. He had 1-2-3 innings in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings.

The Golden Bears and Peacocks remain tied in the NSIC standings after today's split at 9-7. The two teams are in the mix of a 4-way tie, as Wayne State and Winona State join them at 9-7.

Concordia has a conference bye weekend coming up, and will host the University of Sioux Falls at Barnes Field for a 4-game non-conference weekend series. First pitch for each day is 12:00 p.m. USF will join the NSIC for the 2012-13 academic year.
