Early lead disapears as CU falls 60-52 to WSU

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first half but they could not keep the lead as Winona State came back and took home the 60-52 win on Saturday afternoon. Carissa Wolyniec (Minneapolis, Minn.) led all scorers with 19, 14 in the first half alone on 4-5 shooting from behind the arc. The Golden Bears were just 5-27 in the second half costing them the win. The Golden Bears forced 17 turnovers on the night but could only turn them into 15 points all game. Winona State's bench was also big in the game outscoring CU 18-6, the only points CU got off the bench was six from sophomore Jolene Blood (Mounds View, Minn.). The rest of the bench was a combined 0-8 on the afternoon.

Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis.) came close to a double-double grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring eight points. Winona State's Michelle McDonald had a double-double for the third straight game with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The story of the game was CU's inability to find a consistent way to score in the final 28 minutes of play. After jumping out to a 16-2 lead after just six minutes of play, 11 coming from Wolyniec, Concordia had some trouble getting the ball through the net. Wolyniec's fourth three of the half gave CU a 19-5 lead matching their biggest lead of the game but she would pick up her second foul with 11:08 remaining and Winona started their comeback.

With 6:15 left in the half and CU holding a 24-11 lead, the Warriors found their game. WSU would finish the half on a 16-2 run and take a 27-26 lead in to the locker room. CU would go 1-7 down the stretch and turned the ball over three times during the WSU comeback.

Concordia would shoot 10-28 in the first half going 6-10 from behind the arc. Winona shot 40.7% in half going 11-27 from the field. Winona State would have the only free throw in the half as there were just 13 fouls in the half.

Wolyniec hit a three straight out of the halftime break to give CU the lead at 29-27. Concordia would lead by as much as six in the second half, holding a 33-27 lead with 18:20 left on the clock. The Warriors would go on an 11-0 run after that point, taking a 38-33 lead and CU would never lead again.

The Warriors lead would get as high as eight in the second half, as they lead 48-40 with 8:35 on the clock. Two straight three pointers by Blood brought CU within two at 46-48 with six minutes left, but that was as close as the Golden Bears would get. Concordia could not get over the hump as the clock struck zero. The comeback was halted with just under a minute to play when CU was down four Mandy Poke (Richfield, Minn.) was whistled for a flagrant foul giving WSU four chances at the foul line before CU could get the ball back they were down eight points and never recovered.
