DEFENSE KEYS WIN OVER SMSU

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Golden Bears (10-14, 7-11 NSIC) tied a season high with 11 steals and 24 forced turnovers as they got a big win over Southwest Minnesota State (5-17, 4-14 NSIC) 59-51. Three Golden Bears were in double figures on the night with Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis.) leading the way with 17 points. Rachel Hansen (Eagan, Minn.) had 11 and Carissa Wolyniec (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 10 on the evening. BOX SCORE

Hansen had a career high six steals on the night as Concordia was able to take advantage of the Mustangs lack of ball control. CU finished the game with a 22-11 adavantage in points off turnovers on the night. The Golden Bears also combined for five blocks, two by Whiting as they allowed just 12 points in the paint, outscoring the Mustangs 26-12 in that category.

Concordia jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first four minutes of action. The Mustangs battled back over the next four minutes to tie the game at 10 with 11:58 left in the first half. It was a close battle for the remainder of the first half as SMSU found ways to score on the CU defense. Southwest Minnesota State led by as much as six in the first half, taking that lead with 3:46 left on the clock. 

Whiting scored the next five points for CU to bring the Golden Bears within two at 23-21 with 1:03 left. Jolene Blood (Mounds View, Minn.) hit her first of two three pointers in the game from way beyond NBA range to put CU up 24-23 with 22 seconds left in the half. Concordia wouldHansen take that advantage with them into the locker room.

The Mustangs took the lead back out of the break hitting a three just :36 seconds into the second half. The lead would grow to seven with 15:32 left in the game but a three pointer and a layup by Wolyniec would bring CU within two a minute later. Concordia took the lead back on a Whiting layup at the 12:03 mark putting CU up 38-37.

The Golden Bears would never relinquish the lead as Blood hit a three and Whiting layed the ball giving CU a six point lead with 10:47 left. It was 15-2 CU run over 4:45 that pushed Concordia in front for good. SMSU closed the gap to two with a 4-0 run but a three pointer by Mandy Poke (Richfield, Minn.) in the corner gave CU the momentum back. The lead grew to as much as 8 with 4:15 left in the game as CU would go on to win 59-51. 

Concordia shot 44.4% in the second half with four more made baskets than SMSU proving to be the difference. The Golden Bears were able to take advantage in the paint during the second half outscoring SMSU 16-6 in the final 20 minutes. Next up for CU will be a big match up with Minnesota State who is above CU in the NSIC standings at the moment. Concordia is currently trying to work their way into the NSIC Tournament.
