Hot shooting night keys 89-53 victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Golden Bears (9-13, 6-10 NSIC) shot 50.9$% on Friday night, tying the third highest mark of the season en route to a 89-53 victory over the Upper Iowa Peacocks (2-18, 2-14 NSIC). Sophomore Carissa Wolyniec (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the way with 21 points all coming from made three point baskets. Erica Gress (Apple Valley, Minn.) had 13 points off the bench for CU. Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis.) and Rachel Hansen (Eagan, Minn.) each had 12 as CU had four scorers in double figures on the night. BOX SCORE

On the night CU out shot the Peacocks 50.9-30.6 and made nine more baskets. Concordia also had 14 more made free throws than UIU, which was almost an exact opposite of what happened in their first meeting when it was UIU who made 15 more free throws in their win. Concordia also forced 21 turnovers and outscored Upper Iowa 27-10 in points of turnovers. UIU did have 18 offense rebounds and outscored CU 15-5 in second chance points. The bench for CU made their voice heard as well in the game outscoring UIU 33-13 in that department.

Concordia and Upper Iowa battled close in the opening five minutes of play but then CU went on a roll. With score at 7-6 in favor of the Golden Bears, they then took control scoring 13 straight points. Wolyniec had nine points during the run to lead the way. After a made three pointer by the Peacocks to make 20-9, Concordia was back on the run outscoring UIU 18-3 to end the first half. Wolyniec added two more three pointers during the run and finished the first half with 15 points.

In the second half Concordia used their size to get to the foul line over and over. The Golden Bears got to the line 24 times in the second half and made it count converting on 19 of their attempts. The Peacocks did get any closer than 18 in the second half, an occurrence that happened on three separate occasions. The last time was with 11:07 remaining and the score at 56-38 in favor of CU, as 11-2 run earlier in the half by UIU had closed the gap.

The Golden Bears poured it on after UIU had closed the gap to 18 the third time going on a 19-0 run to extend the lead to 37 at 75-38. The lead never got under 33 again as UIU could not find a way to stop CU in the second half. Concordia's biggest lead came at 87-46 with 1:27 left on the clock.

Jolene Blood (Mounds View, Minn.) had a career high nine points in the win going 7-8 from the line at the end of the game. She was responsible for seven of the CU's final eight points on the night. Concordia's best shooter on the year percentage wise, Anne Skriba (LaCrosse, Wis.) was 3-3 on the night scoring eight points pouring in two from the foul line.

Tomorrow night CU welcomes Winona State (13-9, 8-8 NSIC) to town as Concordia will look to win back to back games for the first time December 3 and December 9 when they beat Mary and Minnesota State in back to back games. WSU fell 59-53 to St. Cloud State on Friday night.
