GOLDEN BEARS SPLIT SEASON OPENING DOUBLEHEADER

Feb. 14 ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia (1-1) hit three homeruns in their two games on Tuesday, showing they will have some pop again this year after setting the school record in homeruns last season. They fell 4-3 in game one against Minnesota Duluth (5-2) but won the second game 4-2 to even up the twin bill.

GAME 1

CalliConcordia was the visiting team in game one and got on the board quickly. Brynn Larsen(Oconto Falls, Wis.) got a one out walk and scored moments later as Calli Brennan(Mendota Heights, Minn.) crushed a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall. UMD tried to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning putting the lead off guy on first after a fly out they had the bases loaded with one out. Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) picked off the runner on second for a big second out as Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) walked the next batter to load the bases again. She got a pop up to end the inning and keep the bases loaded.

The Golden Bears added a run in the second inning, Cassie Bertlesen (Oakdale, Minn.) got on base with a one out walk. She advanced to third after Alicia Meiser(Circle Pines, Minn.) had an infield singe and Katie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn.) singled to right loading the bases. Larsen hit into a infield fly but the ball was dropped by the second baseman and Bertlesen scampered home putting CU up 3-0. Minnesota Duluth got two runners on in the second due to an error and a walk with just one out but again Kluever pitched around the jam.

LarsenBoth teams went down fairly quietly in the third, both left one runner on, both reaching on walks. In the fourth, Bertlesen led off with a walk she was cut down on a fielder's choice by Meiser. Meiser stole second but was stranded on third as Larsen lined out to third to end the threat. UMD got their lead off runner on in the fourth reaching via a single and advancing to second on a throwing error. Kluever pitched around that and a walk to keep the Bulldogs off the board.

Another leadoff walk gave CU a runner to start the fifth but once again they could not get the runner across home. The Bulldogs had stranded seven runners in the first four innings without taking advantage but in the fifth they took advantage. Two of the first three batters reached, one via an error, Kluever got the next batter by via the strikeout as she tried to get out of a jam once again. It did not work as she gave up a three run homer to the next batter.

Concordia had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the sixth but swinging strikeouts by Anderson and Brennan ended the threat. Minnesota Duluth put the first two runners on base to lead off the bottom of the sixth. They had runners on second and third after an error by Kluever as she dropped the throw from the catcher in between pitches. Kluever got ground out to third but a sacrifice fly followed giving UMD the 4-3 lead.

The lead stuck as CU went down in order for the first time all game in the seventh inning. The two teams combined to leave 18 runners on base as the two pitchers walked a total of 11 batters, Kluever had six as well hitting two batters.

GAME 2

KappesFreshman Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) got the start in game two for Concordia and she did not disappoint. She put UMD down in order in the first inning striking out one. The Golden Bears picked up a run in bottom of the first as Anderson led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Brennan walked and then Larsen hit a sac fly to center scoring Anderson.

Kappes put down UMD in order again in the second picking up another strikeout. Tessa Ewert (Hutchinson, Minn.) led off with a walk and then M. Feuerbach plated her with a long homerun to left center field.

Minnesota Duluth's bottom of the lineup could not figure out Kappes either in their first trip up also going down in order. Larsen led off the third with bunt-like single to the pitcher but was called for leaving early on a stolen base attempt.

UMD got to Kappes in the fourth with back to back to back singles with one out to load the bases. Kappes did a nice jump after walking in a run getting a fly out and fielder's choice to end the inning. CU spoiled a lead off walk in the fourth as the left two runners on base.

The Bulldogs got within one in the fifth as Erin Hunecke took the second pitch and deposited it over the left fieldM. Feuerbach fence. UMD put two more runners on base but could not take advantage stranding them at second. CU went down one, two, three in the fifth inning.

Concordia and Kappes worked out of a jam in the top of sixth. UMD got a leadoff single to center and followed it by a single down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third with one out. CU intentionally walked the next batter to get the force out at any base, the moved paid off as the next batter hit a grounder to short and Larsen made the play at home. CU got of the inning getting a pop up to second ending the inning.

Bekah Roth (Shoreview, Minn.) hit a lead off homer in the bottom of the inning giving CU an insurance run giving them a 4-2 lead going into the seventh. Kappes allowed a leadoff walk but got a double play line drive to clear the bases right away. After allowing a hit down the left field line Kappes picked up her fourth strikeout to end the game. Kappes allowed six hits in her first college start picking up the win.
