PUEBLO COMPLETES COMEBACK AGAINST CU

Feb. 17 PUEBLO, Colo. - The Golden Bears (1-2) let a late lead slip away as the dropped the opening game of the RMAC/NSIC Crossover 8-7 to the Colorado State Pueblo Thunderwolves. Concordia led 7-3 going in to the bottom of the sixth until the Thunderwolves came back.  Concordia got the 7-5 win the in second game of the day.

AndersonKatie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn.) led off the game with a walk and stole second after a strikeout. Tessa Ewert (Hutchinson, Minn.) drew a two out walk but both were left on base after Bekah Roth (Shoreview, Minn.) flew out to center. The Thunderwolves got a leadoff walk as well and stole second moment later, she advanced to third on ground out before being cut down at the plate on a fielder's choice. The inning ended as A. Lopez was called out for leaving early.

In the second inning the Golden Bears started with a single from Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) and advanced to second on a one out single by Abby Foster (Waverly, Iowa). Abby Meiser (Circle Pines, Minn) singled to load the bases with one out. After Anderson struck out, Brynn Larsen(Oconto Falls, Wis.) and Calli Brennan (Mendota Heights, Minn.) drew back to back walks to put CU up 2-0. CSUP had a runner reach on a one out error but could not take advantage. 

TjornhomConcordia got a lead off single from Erin Tjornhom (Eagan, Minn.) and she still second but CU could not find out a way to get her across the plate before their half inning ended. The Thunderwovles started their half of the third inning with a single by K. Wagner who advanced to second on a throwing error. She was sacrificed to third for the first out and scored on a single after Ashley Kluever(Cottage Grove, Minn) hit a batter to put runners on first and third. With two outs and runners on first and third J. Bosio had a double to left center to clear the bases. At the end of three CSUP led 3-2 over Concordia.

The fourth inning was a quiet one for both teams as CU went down in order and Kluever pitched around a lead off walk and one out single. 

Larsen led off with a double in the fifth and scored on a one out triple by Tjornhom, she was singled home by Roth in the next at bat to give CU the lead back. Kluever pitched around a hits batsman as CU led 4-3 after five. 

The Golden Bears tried to break it open in the sixth as Foster walked to lead off the inning. Jade Ptacek (Sioux Falls, S. D.) pitch ran for her and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Meiser. Anderson and Brennan singled to load the bases up before Tjornhom stepped up again singling up the middle to score two. Roth singled next to score the third run of the inning as CU took a 7-3 lead. 

CSU-Pueblo fired right back in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to tie the game up. The big hit came with two outs and the bases loaded by Bosio who cleared the bases for her fifth RBI of the game. Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Min.) came in and ended the inning by getting a fly out to center.

The seventh inning saw CU go down in order before CUSP got a the game winner in the seventh with a one out single to short with the bases loaded. Concordia played UC Colorado Springs following the game, the recap will be here when the game is complete.

Concordia vs Colorado Springs 

The Golden Bears (2-2) were able to get a split on the opening day of the RMAC/NSIC CrossoverKappes getting a 7-5 win over UC-Colorado Springs (0-2). Stephanie Kappes picked up her second win of the year in her second start of her career pitching a complete game.

Anderson led of the game reaching on an error but was called for leaving early after Larsen struck out swinging. Brennan singled through the right side and Tjornhom walked but both were stranded on base after Roth grounded out. The Mountain Lions got two runs in the bottom half of the inning starting with back to back singles with an one out. After a wild pitch Belserling doubled up the middle to score both. 

Concordia tied the game up the top half of the second with a two out rally. Katie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) got her first start of the year at first and reached on a fielder's choice. Meiser walked and then Anderson singled to score K. Feuerbach. Larsen then singled at scored Meiser. Kappes pitched around two hits in the bottom of the second but were held scoreless.

The third inning saw CU pick up some insurance runs. Tjornhom led off with a homer to center to put Concordia up 3-2. M. Feuerbach had a one out double and Cassie Bertelsen (Oakdale, Min.) walked CU had runners on first and second with one out. Missie's sister Katie doubled to score both her and Bertlesen to go up 5-2 at the end of three and half. UCCS got a run back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a one out triple to right center and scoring on a groundout to second.

RothCU picked up two more runs in the fourth, Brennan walked and Tjornhom singled before Roth doubled to score Brennan. With one out Bertlesen hit a sac fly to right field scoring Brennan. Kappes put the Mountain Lions down in order in the fourth. Concordia led 7-3 after four innings of play.

Despite Meiser getting a lead of single CU was unable to push across another run. Kappes got into trouble in the bottom of the inning as the first three batter reached to load the bases up. After a fly out Kappes walked a runner in but a fly out and strikeout ended the threat.

Nobody scored in the sixth inning and so the game went to the seventh with CU leading 7-4. The Golden Bears could not get any more insurance runs in the top of the seventh despite a walk and Meiser reaching on an error. UCCS got the first two batters on base in the seventh before a strikeout put CU two outs away from the win. A single platted a run but Kappes was able to get a fielder's choice and a fly out end the game and leave the bases loaded.

Tomorrow Concordia will play at 1:00 p.m. against Nebraska-Kearney and then at 3:00 p.m. they meet up with Adams State.
