MARSHALL, Minn. – After allowing two scores early, the Concordia University soccer team replied with three unanswered goals to defeat Southwest Minnesota State 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears won their second consecutive game on the road, improving to 8-7-1 overall and 7-5-1 in the NSIC. CU is now in a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference with Bemidji State and St. Cloud State – all three have 22 points.
Southwest Minnesota State took a 2-0 lead in the first period as Megan Kilroy scored twice in the 26th and 35th minutes. The Golden Bears quickly responded, though, with a goal by
Chloe Moore (Lakeville, Minn.) 1:48 after SMSU's second score. The goal was Moore's team-leading eighth of the season, while
Amanda Olsen (Cottage Grove, Minn.) tallied the assist.
Nearly four minutes into the second half,
Jess Bianchi (Rogers, Minn.) netted the game-tying goal on an assist from Olsen and
Arielle Stimson (Lakeville, Minn.). Olsen leads the squad with 11 assists this season. Stimson then connected for the game-winner at the 69:26 mark, assisted by
McKenzie Buck (Hudson, Wis.).
The Golden Bears accumulated 19 shots, one shy of their season-high, 11 of which coming in the second period.
Emma Gartner (Springdale, Ark.) fended off two shots in the first 45 minutes, while
Kayla Kuczaboski (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) made four saves in the second half, improving to 3-3-1 on the year.
Concordia returns to Sea Foam Stadium on October 26 for its last home game of the season. The five seniors will be honored with Senior Day against Upper Iowa at 7:00 p.m.
