Wildcats strangle Golden Bears Offense

WAYNE, Neb. - The Golden Bears (8-13, 5-10 NSIC) never led all game long as the dropped their 10th game in 12 trips on the court, falling 59-54 to #7 Wayne State (19-2, 13-2 NSIC). Freshman Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis.) had 14 points which lead the team. Carissa Wolyniec (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 12 points all from made three pointers. BOX SCORE

Jodi Batzel (Rochester, Minn) came off the bench and had nine points, all in the first half. Mandy Poke (Richfield, Minn.) led the team with seven rebounds in the game. Concordia again struggled to score shooting just 26.5% on the night and was just 6-23 from behind the arc.

Wayne State jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the opening 5:20 of action and Concordia was behind the eight ball immediately. CU battled back over the next five minutes and cut the lead to 16-14 as the teams went into the media timeout. The Wildcats scored four straight out of the break to extend the lead to six at 20-14. Batzel had six points in the first 13 minutes of play off the bench to lead Concordia in scoring early.

Batzel continued to keep CU close in the first half finishing with nine points, she teamed up with Whiting, who finished her first half with eight points. The Wildcats shot 47.6% from the field in the first half as well as converting 11-14 from the free throw line. Concordia shot 32.3% from the field in the first half.

The second half started with the Wildcats scoring the first five points of the half and taking a ten point lead. Concordia battled back and pulled within two at 37-35 with 11:39 left. WSC put their foot on the gas pedal and went on a 11-2 run to take a 48-37 with eight minutes remaining.

Concordia could never get back in the game as the Wildcat lead never dropped below eight until the last minute of the game. Wolyniec hit a three pointer to get CU within four with 17 seconds left but that was as close the game got as Concordia fell to 5-10 in the NSIC.
