Habeck's career high paces CU

saint paul, minn. - the golden bears freshman middle katie habeck stepped up on friday night leading concordia (9-0, 1-0 nsic with 13 kills in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-17) sweep of northern state (5-4, 0-2 nsic). kayla koenecke and ellie duffy both had double digits kills as well. Koenecke had 11 and duffy had 10. cassie weaver set a career high in digs with 10, five behind megan carlson, who led the defense with 15. box score | listen live | watch live

junior michelle graham got her first start of the season and had three kills on the evening. Freshman ashley murtha also saw a lot of playing time and had a career high six digs. Carlson finished the game with eight kills. amanda konetchy had 40 assists in the set as cu hit .354 in the match.

in the first set the golden bears and wolves battled back and forth until the mid point of the set. With the score tied at nine the golden bears scored seven of the next eight points to take a 16-10 lead. During the run koenecke had a pair of kills and the defense forced two attack errors. Back to back kills by ellie duffy gave cu a 18-11 lead late in the set. Concordia went on to take the set 25-14. Koenecke had five kills alone in the first set and duffy was close behind with four.

the second set saw cu get up early, scoring the first five points of the set with carlson serving after a service error by the wolves started the set. Northern state never really recovered as the golden bears continued to pound the ball taking a 15-8 lead midway through the set. With the score 15-10 in favor of concordia, the golden bears rallied off eight straight points habeck had four kills during the span including three straight at one point. On cue the second set ended on a kill by habeck, giving cu a 25-12 set win. Habeck had seven kills in the second set, the main reason she had a career high.

in the final set concordia again got off to a hot start taking a commanding 9-3 lead out of the gate. Duffy and koenecke were key to hot start combining for five kills. Trailing 19-8 the wolves clawed there way back in the set cutting the cu lead to just six at 20-14. Four straight attack errors by the golden bears helped aid the nsu rally. Concordia would not be denied however as they continued their streak of 27 straight sets won to start the year and have now won 29 straight sets dating back to the 2010 season.

the golden bears have now won 73 straight regular season nsic matches, 53 straight home matches and 31 straight matches overall. Concordia will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Against u-mary at the gangelhoff center.
