saint paul, minn. - the golden bears (1-3-0) fell to nsic preseason favorite winona state (2-2-1) 3-1 before a decent crowd on a chilly night at sea foam stadium. Concordia got the first with a goal in the 21 minute by
amanda olsen. The goal was scored a nice bit of play as
chloe moore had a throw in that she sent in the box,
arielle stimson then flicked it on to olsen who put the ball in the back of the net going through the keepers hand.
box scorein the first half both teams sent the ball back and forth with out either have too much time of solid possession. The golden bears goal came a little bit against the run of play as it there was not much build up prior to the olsen goal. Winona state responded a nine minutes later as alaina kne got the ball off a pass from melissa sellier and beat
megan kurtz who dove for the ball. The match went into half with the score knotted at one. The golden bears defenders moore,
kim sauberlich and
emily ecklund did a nice job keeping the warriors at bay.
the second half was a little different then the first in that winona state was able to keep the ball in the cu half for a majority of the time. They weren't possessing the ball for long stretches of time, however cu was unable to clear the ball out of the half. The warriors got rewarded when a ball was crossed to the center of the box. Kurtz went out to get the ball and was knocked down by a wsu forwarded, after kurtz had the ball fairly secure in her grasps. The play was not whistled dead and by the end of the scrum the warriors' amanda bergstedt put the ball in the back of the net. With the scored 2-1, winona state got another goal this time from a long strike from sellier. Sellier controlled a pass from sarah colleran and took a shot that beat a surprised kurtz as it fell in the back of the net. The game remained 3-1 at the end of 90 minutes sending cu home with a tough 3-1 loss.
concordia will be right back at it this weekend as they host minnesota state and southwest minnesota state on saturday and sunday. Family day is on saturday and if you show up at 11:30 a.m. You and your family can sign up for free tickets to the soccer, volleyball and football games along with getting a visit of the campus. Kick off on saturday is at 12:00 p.m.
