D. - senior sami mattson broke the concordia (22-10, 5-3 nsic) record for homeruns in a single season and career homerun record in game one against mary (16-12, 3-5 nsic), as cu split the doubleheader with the marauders on saturday afternoon. The golden bears won game one 9-7 and fell in game two 7-6 as mary withstood a cu rally in the fifth and sixth innings. box game 1 | box game 2
game 1:
concordia took control of game one with a seven run out burst in the second inning. The golden bears loaded the bases to start the inning on a mattson single, tessa ewert walk and erin tjornhom single. Missie feuerbach singled home mattson to start the scoring. Katie feuerbach drew a walk to bring home the second run. Stephanie schmikla picked up an rbi on a fielder's choice to give cu a 3-0 lead. Katie anderson doubled to score two more for cu and the brynn larsen doubled to bring home the final two runs of the inning.
mary got back in the game in the bottom third scoring five runs on six hits. The big hit of the inning came with two outs as barretto doubled home two runs. Concordia responded in the top of the fourth as mattson hit a two out, two run homer to give cu a 9-5 lead. The golden bears took advantage of a error in the inning.
the game stayed fairly quiet till the bottom of the seventh when mary hit a two run homer to cut the lead to 9-7. Ashley kluever got brown to ground out to end the game.
game 2:
the second game of the double header was a little different as it was mary who took the lead early. Neither team scored through the first two and half innings. Mary was able to score a pair of runs in the bottom of third. A leadoff homerun provided the games first run and an error allowed the second run of the inning to score.
mary picked up another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. The golden bears tied up the game in the top of the fifth as they scored three runs on four hits. Back to back singles started the inning and after a ground out cu had runners on second and third with one out. Kluever singled home the first cu run scoring tjornhom. After anderson was hit by a pitch the bases were loaded. A fielder's choice followed as m. Feuerbach was out at home. With two outs and the bases loaded calli brennan had an rbi single and mattson drew a walk to tie up the game.
cu did not hold the lead long as mary scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-3 lead. In the top of the sixth cu closed the gap again scoring three runs. All the scoring came with two outs. K. Feuerbach singled and kluever was hit by the pitch to start the rally. Katie anderson hit a three run homer to cut the deficit to one.
after holding mary scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, cu went down in order to end the game.
concordia will host its first nsic doubleheader of the year wednesday as they host winona state at 2 p.m.
