saint paul, minn. - the rain stayed away on wednesday afternoon at carlander field as concordia (23-11, 6-4 nsic) split with #8 winona state (25-4, 9-1 nsic) taking game one 10-2 in six innings and losing the second game 7-0. Concordia used three homeruns in the first game including a walk off grand slam by
katie anderson.
brynn larsen and
sami mattson also added homers.
ashley kluever earned the win in game one pitching a complete game.

game 1:
after kluever got the first two batters of the game out via the strikeout she allowed back to back walks before getting an inning ending fly out to right field. The golden bears got a solo shot by power slapper larsen, as she launched a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right field.
winona state got two runs in the second to take their first lead of the day. A one out walk in the second and two out rally was key as a back to back singles and a wild pitch allowed the warriors to take the lead.
tessa ewert got a lead off single in the bottom of the second but that was all cu could manage. Wsu also had a lone single in the top of the third but kluever was starting to take over the warriors.
concordia got four runs in the bottom of third as they took back the lead. Anderson got a one out single and stole second to get the rally started. Larsen reached on an error by short to put cu runners on first and second. The golden bears tried to execute a double steal as anderson stole third and larsen stole second. The throw to third was off the mark and it allowed anderson to get home to tie the game. A single by
calli brennan plated larsen from second and then mattson hit her 13th homerun of the season to clear the bases.
the fourth and fifth innings were fairly quiet as cu held to a 5-2 lead. In the top of the sixth inning wsu got a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a pop out to second kluever hit a batter to put runners on first and second with one out. The warriors loaded the bases following a fly out to left field. Kluever got out of the bases loaded jam getting a fly out down the left field line.
concordia started out the bottom of the sixth inning with three straight singles to left field.
stephanie schmikla then drew a walk to put cu up 6-2. Anderson then smashed a grand slam to left field hitting the gangelhoff center wall to give concordia the upset win.
game 2:
winona state got the scoring started in top of the first inning with a pair of runs in their half of the inning. The warriors got a lead off walk and then a fielder's choice followed by an error allowed the runner from first to score. A one out single to center scored the second run of the inning. Concordia tried to answer in the bottom of the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Unfortunately for cu they were unable to score in the best chance they would have all game.
the warriors got another run in the second inning as wsu loaded the bases with one out and scored on a two out walk. Neither team garnered a hit through the third inning. In the top of the fourth winona state got back to back to singles to start the inning putting runners on first and third with nobody out. A wild pitch allowed the fourth run of the game to score and a single down the left field line allowed another run to score. A double down the right field line scored the sixth run of the game and the seventh came home on a single to left.
concordia came close to getting on the board in their half of the fourth as the inning ended when ewert was thrown out at home trying to score on
missie feuerbach's double to right center. Neither team scored the rest of the game as winona state won the game 7-0.
the golden bears will back in action this weekend as they travel to wayne state on saturday and then take on #17 augustana on sunday.
