Kluever's near no hitter leads cu in split at nsu

aberdeen, s. D. - the golden bears got a near no hitter in game one of an nsic doubleheader against northern state from ashley kluever as cu won 4-0. Kluever did not allow a hit in the first six inning of action and allowed just two hits all game as she earned the shut out. The golden bears fell 6-1 in game two. game 1 box | game 2 box

game 1:
concordia got on the board in the first inning as katie anderson singled to lead off the game. After brynn larsen popped out to short, anderson stole second to get into scoring position. calli brennan singled to left scoring anderson. sami mattson reached on a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning and following a walk of erin tjornhom, tessa ewert ended the inning with a foul out to first. ashley kluever got the wolves first two batters of the inning before giving up a two out walk. The runner advanced to second on a passed ball putting a runner in scoring position with two away. A come backer to the mounded ended the threat as cu held a 1-0 lead after one.

katie feuerbach had a one double in the second as cu was poised to extend their lead. Anderson came up for the second straight inning and got a two out single moving k. Feuerbach to third. Anderson picked up her second stolen base in consecutive innings as larsen came up with runners on second and third. She plated both runners with a single up the middle giving cu a 3-0 lead. The inning ended as larsen was called for interference on a grounder by brennan. Kluever got the wolves to go down in order in the second

concordia did the same thing in the top of the third going down one, two, three. Northern state got a two out walk much like the first inning but the runner was cut down trying to steal second. The golden bears were close to adding to their lead in the fourth inning as they had runners on first and third with two way. stephanie schmikla had single and a stolen base and katie anderson picked up her third single in four innings. Unfortunately larsen flied out to left to end the inning. Kluever kept nsu off the base in the bottom of the fourth inning.

the golden bears again threatened in the top of the fifth as mattson and tjornhom had back to back singles with one out. Ewert moved them to second and third with two outs but a strikeout of missie feuerbach ended the scoring chance. Kluever continued to roll as she once again put the wolves down in order, she had retired seven in row at this point in the game.

in the sixth inning cu went down in order as nsu stayed in the game holding cu scoreless for the fourth straight inning northern state got a pair of runners on in the bottom of the sixth via the walk as they put runners on first and second with two away. Kluever kept the wolves from breaking through as she got nsu to end the inning by grounding into a fielder's choice.

back to back singles by larsen and brennan in the top of the seventh gave concordia a chance to extend their lead. Mattson picked up the third straight single in the inning to plate larsen and moved pitch runner megan revoir to second. Tjornhom was the first out in the inning as she struck out. A single by ewert loaded the bases with one down. M. Feuerbach flew out to center and revoir was cut down at home to end the inning. Kluever entered the seventh without giving up a hit but her bid at no hitter ended with the first batter as she gave up a single. Nsu got another single to follow and had runners on second and third with one out. A northern state fly out and come backer to the mound ended the game.

game 2:
anderson started game two just like she did in game one leading off with a single. She advanced to second larsen's ground out. Brennan reached on fielder's choice as anderson was thrown out trying to advance to third. Northern state had a chance to score a run in the bottom of the first as they got a two out walk followed up by a double to put runners on second and third. Schmikla pitched out of the mini jam getting a ground out to short to end the inning.

cu put runners on first and third with one out to open up the second as ewert hit a one out double and m. Feuerbach followed it up with a single. K. Feuerbach reached on a fielder's choice scoring ewert as m. Feuerbach was out at second. Kluever singled to left to keep the inning alive and an anderson single loaded the bases. Larsen grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning. Wolves were able to get to schmikla in the second as a one out walk was followed by a fielder's choice and a passed ball to put a runner on second with two out. A single to center plated the nsu runner from second tying the game at one. M. Feuerbach threw her second runner out trying to steal in the doubleheader to end the inning.

the golden bears went down in order in the to of the third. Nsu got a lead off single in their half of the third, but a sac bunt and pop up to second meant there was now two outs with a runner on second. A ground out to schmikla ended the inning and keep the score at 1-1 after three. M. Feuerbach got a one out single in the top of the fourth by that was all they could muster as they failed to break the tie in the top of the fourth. A walk and sac bunt by nsu put a runner in scoring position with one away in the bottom of the fourth. Another walk put runners on first and second with one down. Northern state took the lead as they got a single and the runner from second scored. An error by tjornhom moved the runners up to second and third. An error by mattson scored the third run of the inning and a bunt single next made the nsu lead 4-1. Yet another single loaded the bases up as northern looked to pull away. Brittany huback gave nsu a five run lead as she roped a single scoring two. The wolves kept the pressure on as the runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. After a walk loaded the bases relief pitcher cassye mcmahon got a double play to get out of the inning.

brennan got a two out single for cu in the fifth but once again were unable to take advantage. Northern state had a one out single and followed it up with a walk to put pressure on cu again in the bottom of the sixth. A strikeout calmed the storm for a moment giving cu two outs in the inning. Nsu got a single to left but the runner going from second to third was thrown out. Concordia went down in order in the sixth and nsu did not fare much better as their first two batters got out and following a walk mcmahon got a ground out to short to end the inning.

the golden bears got a leadoff double in the top of the seventh but a fly out and two straight groundouts ended the game and gave northern state the 6-1 win.

concordia will be action tomorrow afternoon at mary, the doubleheader will start at noon.
