fayette, iowa - the golden bears (19-7, 2-0 nsic) swept the first double header of the nsic season as they picked up a pair of wins over upper iowa (5-24, 1-5 nsic), 4-1 and 3-2. Sami mattson tied two career marks on tuesday afternoon with a single swing of a bat. Her sixth inning homerun was her eleventh on the year and 28th of her career. The eleventh homerun tied the single season school record and tied the career mark for homeruns as well. game 1:
starter ashley kluever struck out the side to open up the game, all swinging. In the bottom of the first katie anderson singled up the middle to start the game. She advanced to second on a brynn larsen ground out to first before stealing third. The golden bears failed to score as the inning ended with two groundouts to short.

in the top of the second uiu's hannah jones was the first peacock to put the ball in play as she flied out to left. Chelsey sechrest grounded out to third and the inning ended as trisha hagensick struck out swinging. The golden bears went down in order in the second with two groundouts and a fly out to left field.

the strike out party continued for kluever as she again struck out the side in the third inning. In the bottom of the inning cu again went down in order, with a groundout, strikeout and then a fly out to close out the inning. Upper iowa got on board in the top of of the fourth as adrienna olson homered to center field with one out. Her hit was the first of the game for uiu. Following another strikeout the peacocks got a two out double before the inning ended with a groundout to third. Through four innings kluever had nine strikeouts in the game.

the golden bears scored in the bottom of the inning tying the game up. Ewert doubled to right center with one out and scored on a two single to center by erin tjornhom. Following a missie feuerbach single the inning ended as kluever popped up to second.

the peacocks threatened again in the top of the fifth as they got a leadoff double followed by a batter reaching on an error with one out advancing hagensick to the third. Kluever pitched out of the jam as she struckout the next two batters to end the inning. The golden bears went down in order on three straight strikeouts in the inning.

in the top of the sixth the peacocks never got the ball out of the infield as they grounded out twice and popped up to second. Larsen started the bottom of the sixth off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a one out walk of ewert. A wild pitch moved both larsen and ewert up a base putting runners on second and third with no outs. Mattson cleared the bases with a three run homer to left. Following two consecutive outs, kluever got on base with a two out walk. The inning ended as katie feuerbach grounded out to the pitcher.

kluever got her seventh complete game of the year as she picked up her 12th strikeout of the game to get the win. Her 12 strikeouts tied a career high for kluever. Only four of the uiu batters reached base in cu's 4-1 win.

game 2:
stephanie schmikla started game two allowing a hit the leadoff batter. The leadoff runner got to third with two outs but schmikla ended the threat getting jones to ground out to second. Larsen got a one triple but was stranded on third as mattson struck out and tjornhom fouled out to first.

in the top of the second inning schmikla got the first two batter of the inning out on groundouts, one to the pitcher and one to the catcher. Following a two out single, the peacocks were retired with fly out to right field. K. Feuerbach had a two out double to left center in the second for cu but was unable to score in the inning.

the peacocks got another runner on in the third with a one out single up the middle but following a strikeout, m. Feuerbach gunned down schaefer trying to steal second. Anderson reached on a walk to begin cu's half of the inning and found her self on third with one out as she went to second on a ground out and stole third for the second time on the day. After an ewert strikeout, mattson gave cu the lead with a single to second scoring anderson. Tjornhom popped up to first to end the third.

upper iowa got the leadoff batter on again in the top of the fourth with a single to center field. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second and a walk followed to put runners on first and second with one away. Schmikla got a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning as uiu had runners on first and third with one out. The peacocks executed a double steal as bennek stole home to tie the game. The inning ended with a pop fly to first but upper iowa did enough damage to tie the game one. In the bottom of the inning upper iowa got the golden bears to pop up three times to go down in order.

the top of the fifth started out a lot like the fourth for uiu as they got a leadoff single followed up by a walk. Upper iowa's olson sacrificed the runners to second and third to increase the the threat. Concordia looked like it might get out of the jam as they cut down bergman at the home in a pickoff attempt, but the peacocks got a double from bennek to right center scoring schaefer from second.the inning ended as schmikla got jones to fly out to center. Concordia tried to rally back in the bottom half of the inning as schmikla led off with a single, but anderson struck out and larsen lined into a double play to end the inning.

schmikla kept cu in the game in the sixth inning getting the first two batters of the inning out and following a single to right, the inning ended with a fielder's choice. Ewert drew a leadoff walk and went to third as mattson reached on an error, as concordia put runners on first and third with nobody down. Tjornhom flew out to centerfield scoring ewert from third to tie the game. The inning ended with feuerbach and kluever popping out.

kluever relieved schmikla in the top of the seventh as the game was tied at two. She got the peacocks out in order striking out the first batter of the inning and then getting the last two outs via pop ups. The bottom of the seventh started much like the peacocks as cu's leadoff batter k. Feuerbach struck out and kluever popped out. Anderson singled up the middle and then stole second to put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Larsen came up with a huge hit scoring anderson from second and giving concordia the 3-2 victory.
