Wildcats shut down cu bats

wayne, neb. - wayne state (23-12, 11-3 nsic) was able to shut down the high powered golden bears offense on saturday afternoon as they swept cu in a nsic doubleheader. Concordia (23-13, 6-6 nsic) fell in game one 5-0 as wsc's katie goetzinger threw a seven inning shutout allowing just two hits and striking out ten. In game two sami mattson's 14th homerun of the year was the offensive highlights as cu fell 4-1. Concordia's brynn larsen had a pair of hits in each game, the only golden bear to do so, she is now on a four game hitting streak. game 1 box | game 2 box

game 1
the first inning and half went extremely quick in game one as both teams went down in order. Wayne state took the lead in the bottom of the second a passed ball and wild pitch put a wildcat runner on third with one out. Following a strikeout another wild pitch allowed dukich to score from third. Wayne state did not have a hit in the inning as the leadoff batter walked and dukich reached on a fielder's choice.

concordia continued to struggle against goetzinger in the third as they again went down in order. Wsc followed by doing the same thing as both pitchers took no hitters in to the fourth. A one out single to left by larsen was the game's first hit. A pair of strikeouts followed as cu failed to take advantage. The wildcats broke up ashley kluever's no hit bid as they got back to back singles to start the fourth inning. A walk loaded the bases with no outs as wayne state looked poised to extend their lead. After strikeout, wsc's blair kuhl singled up the middle scoring two runs.

tessa ewert singled to left to lead off the fifth inning as the golden bears tried to get back in the game. However erin tjornhom lined out and the feuerbach's sisters, missie then katie struck out swinging to end the inning. Kluever pitched around a walk and error in the bottom of the fifth to keep the score 3-0.

the golden bears went down in order in the top of sixth and wsc opened up the game in their half of the sixth, scoring two runs on two hits. Natalie ruechel hit a two run homer to put the wildcats up 5-0. Concordia couldn't muster a hit or a runner in the seventh as they fell in the opening game.

katie anderson opened up game one with a double to right center as the golden bears had their first runner in scoring position of the afternoon. After a larsen ground out to the pitcher, anderson stole third. Cu failed to score as brennan grounded out and mattson struck out to end the inning. The wildcats did what concordia failed to do as the scored two runs in their half of the first. The inning started with a single followed by a sac bunt putting the runner on second with one out. Following a fly out to right field jennifer radley homered to left center.

the game settled down in the second as both teams went hitless in their at bats. Anderson got her second hit of the game as she singled with two outs in the third, but a strike out of larsen ended the inning. Anderson now leads the team with 13 two hit games. Wsc also got a runner on base with two outs in the third but they failed to score as well. Mattson homered to right center with one away to pull cu within one at 2-1 following the top of the fourth. Mattson continues to reset the record books with each homerun as she now as 14 on the year and 31 in her career. The wildcats went down in order in the bottom of the fourth.

cu could not tie the game in the fifth as they went down one, two, three. Wsc got a two out single in the bottom of the inning but failed to score. Larsen tried to get a rally going in the top of the sixth as she reached on a one out single but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. The wildcats got a one out double to start their sixth inning rally. An error put runners on first and second with one down and a wild pitch moved each runner up a base moments later. A walk of the next batter loaded the bases with just one out. Kluever got a strikeout to get within an out of getting out of the jam. Brittany greenwood ended that thought as her single through the left side scored two runs and gave wsc a 4-0 lead.

concordia went down in order in the seventh as wayne state took game two 4-0.

the golden bears will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on #17 augustana at 1 and 3 p.m. In sioux falls as a part of an nsic doubleheader. Cu will be home for a nsic doubleheader tuesday at two and four p.m. Against minnesota state.
