saint cloud, minn. - sami mattson hit her tenth homerun of the year in game one as cu beat mary 4-3. Mattson is now just one homer shy of the school record for most homeruns in a year and also one behind the schools all time career homerun record. katie anderson also added a homerun game one for the golden bears. In game two missie feuerbach's second career grand slam propelled cu to a 5-3 win over saint cloud state. cu/mary box | cu/scsu box

anderson got the golden bears on the board early as she homered to left field to put cu up 1-0. brynn larsen tripled and scored on a wild pitch as concordia took a very quick 2-0 lead. Cu was not done as mattson singled to center and stole second base with one out. katie feuerbach singled to left to advance mattson to third and she scored on a ashley kluever sacrifice fly to center field. It was the 15th time this season that the golden bears scored a run in their opening frame.

kluever pitched out of jam in the bottom of the first as she gave up a lead off double and threw a wild pitch advancing the runner to third. She got consecutive ground outs but then walked two batters loading the bases with two outs. She got out of the jam by getting the next batter to ground into a fielders choice cutting the runner down at home.

concordia got a runner on in the second on an error but was not able to take advantage of it. Mary on the other hand came back in their half of the inning with three runs on three hits. The inning started with a double and a single putting runners on first and third with nobody out. A ground out neutralized the threat for moment but a passed ball moments latter put mary on the board. A walk and a stolen base put runners on second and third with one away. Kluever struck the next batter out to get within one out from escaping the inning with just one run given up but mary's b. Hageness singled to plate two runners and tie the game at three.

mattson hit her tenth homerun of the season to lead off the third as cu took back the lead. Back to back walks of kluever and k. Feuerbach put runners on first and second with one out but cu failed to score any more in the inning. Mary put a runner on second with nobody out and she advanced to third moments but later but the threat was eliminated as she was thrown out trying to steal home.

bekah roth picked up a single in the top of the fourth but that was all cu could muster, mary went down in order in their half. In the fifth inning the golden bears went down one, two, three as mary would not allow cu to pull away. The marauders put the pressure on kluever and cu in their half of the fifth as they put their first two batters on the inning on base. Kluever held u-mary in check as she put down the next three batters.

larsen picked up a two out single in the sixth for cu but was cut down trying to steal second to end the inning. Mary again got their first two batters of the inning on base via a walk and an error. Kluever got a fly out to left and line out second to put water on the fire. A passed ball put runners on second and third with two outs but another fly out left ended the inning.

in the seventh inning roth picked up another single, this time leading off the inning. Kluever added another single following a pair of fly outs to put runners on first and second with two down. K. Feuerbach failed to convert grounding into a fielder's choice to end the inning. Mary had one last chance to tie the game in the seventh as barretto drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a rios sacrifice. Kluever got a pop out to close out the game and give cu the win.

in the top of the first larsen had a one out single and roth reached on an error to put golden bears on first and second with one away. The attempted rally fell short as mattson struck out and missie feuerbach grounded out to short. In the bottom of the first saint cloud state put their first two runners on base both with singles. Following a pop up to second schaeffer drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Kluever appeared to get out of the jam striking out koski for the second out but saiz singled to right scoring a pair of huskies giving scsu a 2-0 lead after one.

cu went down in order in the second and scsu didn't do much better in their half of the inning as they got a lead off single but not much else. In the top of the third anderson had a one out single and larsen singled right after, putting runners on first and second with one out. Both anderson and larsen advanced on a roth ground out and mattson walked to load the bases with two outs. M. Feuerbach hit a grand slam to center giving cu a 4-2 lead after two and half innings. It was her second career grand slam and first homerun this season.

kluever got the huskies to go down in order in the bottom of the third. In the fourth inning both the golden bears went down in order as they held on to their 4-2 lead. Scsu got a one out single in the bottom of the fourth, the huskies pinch ran and the next patter flied out to left sending the runner to second. Kluever got a pinch hitter to strike out to end the threat in the fourth.

concordia's larsen got a one out single and stole second as cu had a runner in scoring position with one out. Mattson walked with two outs as cu was looking to build on their two run lead. M. Feuerbach couldn't deliver this time however as she struck out to end the top of the fifth. The huskies again put pressure on cu as they put runners on first and second to start the half inning. Kluever then got a fly out and a fielders choice, scsu did score a run on the fielders choice to make it 4-3. With two out and a runner on first ally koski singled to center for scsu and put a runner in scoring position with two away. Katie erikson pinch hit for the huskies as they also pinch ran trying in increase the pressure on concordia. Kluever got erikson to strike out looking as cu clung to a 4-3 lead after five.

it did not take long for the golden bears to get the run back as kluever started the sixth off with a singled and advanced to second on a past ball. K. Feuerbach sacrificed her to third on a bunt and tessa ewert smacked a ground rule double to right center to plate kluever. Cassye mcmahon pinch ran for ewert and advanced to third on a two out single by anderson. The inning ended as anderson was called out for leaving early at first base. Scsu went down in order in the bottom of the sixth as kluever struck out two more.

a one out walk drawn by roth was all cu could muster in the half of the seventh as consecutive ground outs by mattson and m. Feuerbach ended the inning. Scsu's kelly olson tripled to left field to lead off the bottom of the seventh as the huskies looked pull off a comeback. Kluever got the next two batters out on a ground out and fly out before walking schaeffer to put runners on first and third with two down. After a pinch runner was put in at first kluever got koski to pop up to mattson to end the game.

concordia will back in action again tomorrow as they will complete the husky invite with games against umd and bemidji state. Cu will play umd at noon and bsu at six.
