fayette, iowa - the golden bears (12-8, 11-5 nsic) picked up their ninth straight win friday night with a 66-47 win against the upper iowa peacocks (1-19, 1-15 nsic). Freshman jodi batzel had a game high 17 points as she set her career high in the win. shandrell duncan added 10 points and eight rebounds. box score
rachel hansen was the third cu player in double digits as she had 10 points. Friday marked the first game all season neither jineen williams nor maurika hickman had double digit points. Hickman fell just short with nine. zoraa quoie had nine points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists in the win.
in the first half upper iowa jumped out to an early five point lead as they led 11-6 at the 11:55 mark. Quoie was a monster on defense in the opening minutes as she had three steals in the first six minutes of action. Williams had five points before the media timeout in the first half. The golden bears used a 9-2 run to take a 15-13 lead thanks to four straight points by jodi batzel. Upper iowa hit a three on their next possession, thanks to two offensive rebounds, to take the lead back at 16-15. After another peacocks jumper both teams turned the ball over a couple times. Upper iowa was using a 2-3 zone in the first half which controlled the cu offense for a majority of the first half. Back to back layups by batzel and quoie gave cu a 19-18 lead with 3:19 left in the half. Concordia closed out the first half on a 7-0 run with six points coming from duncan alone, as cu took a 30-22 lead into halftime.
duncan led all scorers in the first half with eight points on 4-5 shooting. She also had four rebounds with three coming on the offensive glass. Upper iowa was held to 27.6% shooting in the first half on just eight made baskets. Cu also forced 9 peacock turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of action.
upper iowa ended the run as they started the second half off with four straight points to get within four. Cu went on 10-0 in response, six by hansen and four by batzel as they took a 14 point lead 40-26 with 14:56 left in the game. Batzel had eight points in the first 7:32 of the second half. Cu took a 52-36 lead in to the second half media timeout. Hickman hit her second three of the game as cu took a 55-36 lead with 9:32 left. Concordia was held scoreless for the next 4:25 but the peacocks couldn't take advantage as they only scored three. Batzel tied her career high with a pair of free throws with 5:07 left to break the scoreless streak. A quoie three pointer gave cu a 22 point lead, their largest of the game.
the golden bears are back in action tomorrow evening as they will be in winona to take on the warriors of winona state at 5 p.m.
