Cu overcomes to's to win tip-off classic

saint paul, minn. - despite 22 turnovers the golden bears (2-0) were able to wrap up the concordia tip-off with a 65-56 win over the university of colorado, colorado springs (1-1). Concordia got 14 points from carissa wolyniec (minneapolis, minn.) as she earned tournament mvp. jodi batzel (rochester, minn.) had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds on the evening, she was named to the all-tournament team as well. box score


concordia got double-digit scoring efforts from many poke (richfield, minn.) and anne skriba (la crosse, wis.) who had 11 and 10 respectively. anika whiting (ashland, wis.) added seven points and five rebounds. rachel hansen (eagan, minn.) had seven points and six rebounds.

in the first half both teams had trouble finding the bottom of the basket as both teams combined to shoot under 33% in the opening twenty minutes. After ten minutes of play cu trailed 8-7, less than a minute later batzel gave cu a 9-8 lead their first of the game. Concordia gave the lead right back but took the lead back at 13-12 off a whiting triple and cu would not trail again. The golden bears ended the half on a 17-5 run over the last 7:17 of play to take a 27-17 lead at half. Wolyniec hit a layup as time expired to cap the run at the end of the half.

the golden bears kept putting the stranglehold on the mountain lions offense as they extended the lead to 16, 39-23 with 15:38 remaining, their largest of the game. Uccs came back and went on a 15-4 run to draw with five at 43-38. Concordia responded with five straight to take a ten point lead with under nine minutes to play. The mountain lions never got closer than seven as cu went on to win 65-56.

cu will head on the road next weekend for a pair of games in the sunshine state.
