Campbell eclipses 1,000 career receiving in road loss to augustana

sioux falls, s.d. - for the second consecutive week, concordia senior running back sam campbell (cary, ill.) has surpassed a career milestone, going over 1,000 receiving yards in a 37-13 nsic south division loss at augustana (2-3, 2-2 nsic, 2-0 nsic south) on saturday afternoon at kirkeby-over stadium. Concordia falls to 2-3 overall, 1-3 in the nsic and 0-2 in the nsic south. box score

last week, campbell reached 3,000 career all-purpose yards and 2,000 rushing yards and this week he becomes the second player in school history to achieve 3,000 a/p, 2,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving in a career joining all-time rushing leader chris washington (2000-03). Campbell also joins washington as the second running back ever to attain 1,000 career receiving yards and already holds the school record for running back receptions (127).

he was the bright spot for the golden bears, rushing 20 times for 96 yards as he went over 95 yards for the third straight week. He also caught five passes for 19 yards in the game.

but it was a 24-yard pass from redshirt freshman jared russo (milwaukee, wis.) to senior charles gilbert (jacksonville, fla.) that gave concordia a 13-10 lead midway through the second quarter. Gilbert's 24-yard score was his 18th touchdown in 17 career games played with 17 of the scores coming from at least 23-yards out. He finished with three catches for 50 yards.

the one play drive was set up by a blocked punt by senior johnny johnson (minnetonka, minn.). Special teams was working early, as the blocked punt followed a pair of field goals by freshman tom obarski (burnsville, minn.), a 40-yarder to open the scoring in the first quarter and a 37-yarder early in the second quarter.

obarski now has a pair of games with two field goals, both coming in the windy dakota's. He finished 2-3 on field goal attempts, missing wide left on a 56-yard attempt in the second quarter. He also punted five times for a 31.8 average with one inside the 20 and a long of 49. He added a touchback on a kickoff as well.

concordia had good field position early, too, starting on the 40 on their opening drive as augustana kicked out of bounds on a day with a strong south dakota wind, and they used a 38 yard kickoff return by sophomore jay moten (spicer, minn.) to get out to the 39 on their second drive.

but they converted just one of their four third downs in each of the first two quarters as augustana was able to come back and take a 20-13 halftime lead.

it was a solid half of offensive football as concordia gained 200 yards of offense while augustana had 277 including 15 first downs despite going 0-4 on third down. Neither team committed a turnover in the first half, either.

in the second half, that would change as the golden bears turned the ball over four times and were unable to force a viking miscue.

the concordia offense also stalled, gaining 70 yards in the second half as augustana would gain over 200.

the result was augustana scoring 17 second half points while keeping the golden bears off the scoreboard. In all, the vikings scored the games final 27 points.

augustana's 258 rushing yards kept the concordia linebackers busy as senior taylor selby (stratford, wis.) produced a career-high 16 tackles including 1.0 tackle for loss while redshirt freshman jordan halverson (fridley, minn.) also added a career-high 15 stops. Senior al quaye (brooklyn park, minn.) contributed with 12 tackles as well.

concordia's defense entered the game with an impressive 41.0 tackles for loss and 15.0 sacks. Today, they managed 3.0 tackles for loss and were unable to sack augustana quarterback josh hanson as he completed 24-32 for 220 yards and a touchdown, completing at least two passes to eight different players and hitting nine receivers total in the game.

dajon newell produced a 200-yard rushing performance with 22 attempts for 203 yards and a score.

russo, meanwhile, completed 16-41 for 175 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. He was not sacked as the golden bear offensive line has yet to allow a sack on the season.

concordia would convert 4-13 on third downs while augustana was just 2-12 and both teams picked up their only fourth down conversions. Augustana controlled the clock for over 38 minutes in the game as concordia had just over eight and a half minutes of possession in the second half.

the golden bears continue a rough part of their schedule next saturday when they travel to bemidji state in an nsic-north-south clash.
