crookston, minn. - the golden bears (9-8, 8-5 nsic) picked up their sixth straight win on saturday evening knocking off a red hot minnesota, crookston (8-9, 5-8 nsic) team 69-59 on the road at lysaker gymnasium. Concordia was led by a double-double from jineen williams, her second of the season as she scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. zoraa quoie scored 16 points, her second highest of the season and rachel hansen added 14, one short of her career-high. box score
cu jumped out early in the first half as they started the game on 12-4 run. Hansen had five of the 12 points in the opening 6:08. The golden eagles were able to keep the lead at two possessions, 4-6 points, throughout most of the first half. Umc cut the cu lead to just two with 1:33 left after four straight made free throws. Quoie responded with a three to give cu a five point lead with 1:18 left in the half, before umc cut the lead to one possession with another pair of free throws at the end of the half.
concordia got eight points from both hansen and quoie in the first 20 minutes as cu clung to a three point lead. Williams had six points and five rebounds. Neither team shot well in the first half as cu had a 36.4% to 28.6% edge. Minnesota, crookston was able to stay in the game in large part because they went 13-14 from the foul line in the first half.
in the second half cu scored the first four points thanks to back-to-back layups by jodi batzel and williams. The golden eagles responded by going on a 10-2 run to take a one point lead, their first lead since the opening minutes of play in the first half. Cu came right back with a 7-0 run of their own and took a six point lead. Umc got within one at 43-42 but the golden bears pushed the lead back to five at 47-42. With 10:49 left umc cut the lead to two but a big three pointer by carissa wolyniec gave cu a 50-45 lead with 10:18 left. Following the media timeout williams hit a layup to extend the lead to seven. The golden bears took their largest lead of the game with 8:17 left, 56-46. Umc never got closer than seven as cu pulled away late from the foul line winning the game 69-59.
williams scored 13 of 19 points in the second half as cu held off rallies by the golden eagles. Quoie was second on the team with eight second half points.
for the game cu outscored umc 23-5 in second chance points thanks to 18 offensive rebounds by the golden bears, batzel led the way with four of her own. Concordia also outscored umc 36-22 in the paint and 25-18 in points off turnovers.
concordia will return home next weekend as they face augustana and #8 wayne state in important nsic conference games. Cu and augustana tip off at 6:00 p.m. On friday night for spring fever night.
