Day of rest, then head into final stretch of spring trip

orlando, fla. - the golden bear softball team (8-6) has earned a day of rest from action at the rebel spring games, putting up a 7-3 record so far on the trip. Their time in florida is winding down, however, and just two days and four games remain on the slate. The golden bears have had an up-and-down past two days, going 2-2 with sweeps both days. Senior anna bjorlin has paced the team at the plate in the four games, going 9-of-14 for a .643 average. She has sent out four doubles in the process. All four cu pitchers have seen action, with junior stephanie schmikla throwing 14 of the 27 innings and cassye mcmahon dishing out a complete game win in her appearance. iup box score - stonehill box score - ashland box score - siu box score

the golden bears went 0-2 on tuesday with a close 7-8 loss against indiana (pa.) and then being shut out for the first time this season, 0-5 to stonehill. The rebounded with far better play on wednesday, defeating ashland 5-2 and southern indiana 7-3.

concordia had an early edge against indiana (pa.) but gave up a big sixth inning that awarded the go-ahead and winning run. A big golden bear inning came in the fifth with four runs put up. abby brundidge highlighted the frame with a bases-clearing double. The team put up one run to tighten the game to 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh, but they left runners in second and third to end the game.

the golden bears struggled to get their bats going in the second game of the day on tuesday. They put up just three hits and were shut out 5-0 by stonehill. tiff rodd had the biggest swing of the game with a lead-off double in the second inning.

things turned around for the golden bears on wednesday, however, starting with a 5-2 win over ashland. Mcmahon gave up two first inning runs but did not allow another ashland player to cross the plate and gave her team a shot at the win. The golden bears delivered with three runs in the third and two in the seventh. Bjorlin had a three-hit game with three rbi and two stolen bases in the win. Aside from bjorlin's three knocks, the hits were spread out among three other players.

multiple run innings gave concordia a 7-2 win over southern indiana in the most recent game played. The third and fourth innings saw all seven runs delivered, with 10 batters reaching the box in the fourth. Three golden bears had multiple hit games, including bjorlin, while a sami mattson two-run home run was the highlighted swing of the matchup. Schmikla went the distance in the win, giving up two earned runs.
