somers, wis. - the golden bears (0-1) were unable to comeback from a 5 point halftime deficit as they feel 77-74 in their season opener to wisconsin-parkside (1-0). maurika hickman led cu with 20 points on 5-14 shooting and 8-8 from the line. jineen williams was second on the team with 17 points on 8-19 shooting. box score
the golden bears got double digit scoring from zoraa quoie and freshman erica gress who both had 12. jodi batzel was cu's scoring leader off the bench going for six points on 2-6 shooting.
concordia got on the board first thanks to a 3 points basket by hickman, who had the first five points for the golden bears. Cu kept the lead for most of the first 11 minutes, uw-parkside took the lead for the second time in the game at the 9:35 mark of the first half and then it was their turn to hold on to the lead for most of the first half and took a 40-35 lead in to the locker room. The difference in the first half was uw-parkside was able to shoot 62.1% verse the golden bears 37.1%. Parkside outscored cu in the paint in the first half 16-14 and made five more baskets than the golden bears to take the lead.
as the second half started uw-parkside quickly jumped out to a seven point lead their biggest lead of the game. The golden bears fought all the way back and took a lead of their own with 15:22 left in the game thanks to another hickman three pointer. Parkside took the lead back with 13:06 off a lay up by cheryl leyns, they extended their lead to six with 11:47 left in the game.
cu went on a 7-0 run to take a 58-57 lead with 8:46 remaining. Gress had six of cu's seven points during the run. The golden bears kept the run going and extended their lead to 64-58 thanks to back to back lay ups by quoie and a lay up from hickman. Parkside scored the next six points to tie the game at 64 with 6:12 left.
the two teams went back and forth for most of the rest of the second half. Parkside took a three point lead late in the second half off a three pointer with 2:36 left. The golden bears came right back and scored four straight to take a 72-71 lead with just 1:15 left. Parkside came right back with six straight point of their own and took a commanding 77-72 lead with :13 seconds left. Hickman got a pair of free throws to get within three but a last second three pointer from her came up short.
cu will be back in action next saturday as they take on #6 emporia state at 3 p.m. In kansas.
