Golden Bears dig up #1 UMD in 3-1 win

duluth, minn. - the #5 golden bears pulled off their second straight upset on a saturday afternoon as they upset #1 minnesota duluth 3-1. Cu moves to 19-4 on the season and 14-0 in the nsic, the golden bears extend their regular season nsic streak to 66 with the 18-25, 25-22, 28-26, 25-22 win. box score

the golden bears had a season high 87 digs as a team and six players had over ten each. megan carlson led the way with 21, she also had 11 kills. kayla koenecke had 16 kills to lead the offense, she added 13 digs as well. kara pioske also had a double double with 13 kills and ten digs. amanda konetchy had 58 assists and ten digs, her ten digs tied for a season and career high.

koenecke's 16 kills was a season and career high. Pioske's 13 kills tied for her season high and her ten digs were also a season high. krista erikson had 12 digs tying her season high. Taylor fieldsted added 16 digs of her own, which was second on the team.

umd was able to take set one thanks in part to an 11-2 start. Cu closed the gap to 15-12 but were not able to get any closer. The bulldogs extended the lead to 19-12 and won the set 25-18.

in set two it was cu who was able to jump out early 13-6. Umd made couple runs to close the gap and get within five points. Cu had a seven point lead at 23-17 but the bulldogs made a late run and got within two at 23-21. The golden bears were able to dig down deep and finish off umd 25-22.

it was barn burner in set three as both teams were determined on the defensive side of the ball. Umd jumped out to a 14-10 lead to force a cu timeout. The golden bears responded with six of the next seven points to take a 16-15 lead. It was umd's turn to call a timeout next and they responded as well taking a 18-16 lead. Umd had game point at 24-22 but the golden bears were able to responded with three straight points to take a 25-24 lead. Umd scored the next two and put cu up against the wall again but a koenecke kill followed by kills by palkert and pioske gave cu a 28-26 set win.

in the decisive fourth set it was cu who gained breathing room at 13-10 midway through the set. The golden bears kept the lead until late in the set when umd tied the match at 20. The two teams traded points until cu got a 24-22 advantage and forced an attack error to win the set 25-22.

cu will home this tuesday to face augustana at 7 p.m. At the gangelhoff center.
