Golden Bear soccer hangs with #7 Minnesota State, decision comes from penalty kick

st. Paul, minn. - the concordia university soccer team stuck with #7 minnesota state throughout the entire 90 minutes of play at sea foam stadium on saturday afternoon. They struck the first blow of the game and went throughout the majority of the game with the score tied up. The mavericks found luck on their side with a late call that resulted in a penalty kick, where they sealed the 2-1 win. box score

kari janes boosted the team at the 23:22 mark, getting a good touch on a ball from the right side of the field and sending it past the maverick goalkeeper to put her golden bears up 1-0. Concordia's defense held the mavericks scoreless for most of the first half, but a final minute opportunity sent the game into a tie at the half, with the score marked at the 44:36 mark.

the second half was a defensive battle. Both teams had some good looks at the net. The only goal of the second half was a penalty shot taken at the 75 minute mark. Msu's jessie audas gained the chance of a penalty kick after the golden bears were called for a handball infraction in the box. Audas deceived concordia's keeper and put the ball low in the left side of the net for the game winner, 2-1.

the golden bears took 13 shots in the game with 7 shots on goal. They had a number of scoring opportunites that simply did not pan out, but were successful in making the mavericks sweat it out nearly the whole game. Cu goalkeeper kaitlin budd had 11 saves off of msu's 13 shots on goal. The mavericks took 25 shot attempts.
