kissimmee, fla. - the golden bear softball team got back in the win column with the help of multiple home runs on thursday, downing stonehill 9-1 in six innings. They hit another ball over the fence in a 4-2 loss to quincy later in the day. Concordia is 10-10 on the season and has four games remaining at the rebel spring games.
the golden bears had a huge third inning against stonehill after losing each of their past four games. Nine straight concordia batters reached with hits on one out, with eight runs scored in the single frame. Big swings came as jamie lindboe knocked out a two-run homer, followed by a three-run dinger from nikki scherr.
the golden bears batted around the order and then some, with every hitter from the top of the lineup to the bottom tabbing a hit in the inning. With all of the runs being earned, the golden bears went up 8-1 in the inning. Lindboe ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, driving in katie anderson with a single to left field that put cu up 9-1. Lindboe was 3-of-4 at the plate with three rbi. Scherr had three rbi off of a single swing and was 2-of-3 at the plate. natalie mast also had two rbi.
stephanie schmikla struck out a season high seven batters to improve to 5-5 on the year. She pitched a complete game and allowed only five hits. After the skyhawks came up with a first inning unearned run, schmikla shut down the opponent, not allowing more than one hit in any inning and only allowing two players to get into scoring position.
concordia was stumped by a strong quincy pitcher in their second game of the day. Bunzell fanned 11 golden bear batters in the game, gaining two strikeouts in each of the first four innings. nikki scherr ended the concordia hitless drought with a two-out bunt single in the third inning.
sami mattson also gained first base with a bunt single in the fifth inning. Following her was tiff rodd, who stopped the golden bears from being shut out by launching a two-run homer over the fence, tying the game at 2-2. The golden bears had a runner in scoring position in the sixth inning, but quincy completed the win by retiring the final six batters in order.
quincy did not have an overpowering offense, out-hitting the golden bears just six to three in the game. But they put good pressure on the concordia defense, marking runs in four of their six innings of at-bats. Two hits in the first inning crossed the first run and, with the help of a concordia error in the second, they went up 2-0.
quincy untied the game just after the golden bears managed to knot things up, once again taking advantage of a concordia error and driving in the run with a single. They added a security run in the sixth inning, stringing together a walk and two hits on two outs.
scherr, mattson and rodd had the only hits of the game for the golden bears. cassye mcmahon took the loss after striking out three batters and giving up two earned runs.
