Golden Bears shut out Eagles in home opener

st. Paul, minn. - concordia university's offense tormented the eagles of northwestern college (mn) in the 2008 home opener on wednesday afternoon. With 33 shots in the game, the golden bears claimed a 2-0 win to improve to 2-1 on the year. They are at northern michigan this friday and return to concordia field to host north dakota this sunday at 1:00 pm.

it was a quick start for the golden bears in their first appearance on home turf of the year. The team rocketed off numerous shot, gaining good looks at the goal from the start. Their hustle earned seven corner kicks throughout the game, providing even more scoring opportunities.

despite cu's dominance of possession time, they were unable to take a lead through the first 57 minutes of play. Freshman emily weimelt put the team up with a score from close on the left side at the 57:24, assisted by savannah nolen and chloe weinberg. This was the fourth straight goal for the forward from lakeville, who also notched a hat trick in cu's last game.

the golden bears fought through improved play by northwestern in the second half and kept the eagles from footing toward the goal. The eagles had four shots in each of the game's periods and had five total shots on goal, including just one in the second half.

concordia gained another scoring opportunity later in the second period. Weimelt booted a ball toward the goal, but was high in her attempt. The ball bounced directly off of the top bar to the foot of nolen, who was waiting for the rebound in the box. One quick kick and nolen had her first collegiate goal and the golden bears led 2-0.

concordia had 12 shots on goal in the game, led by sam voeller with three. Of the team's 33 shots, ten came from weimelt and another five each from three different players. keyton wheelock (1-1-0) earned her first win of the season by denying five shots on goal and keeping the eagles off the board.
