Blocking helps lift team to 17th consecutive win

st. Paul, minn. - a solid blocking game combined with 61 digs to give #2 concordia university its 17th straight win on saturday evening. The 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-13) decision puts the golden bears at 17-1 overall and 6-0 in the nsic. The victory came at the hands of msu moorhead (9-8, 3-2 nsic) on homecoming weekend in front of a season best crowd of 713. Concordia had nine team blocks, including six solos. The 17 consecutive wins is the second longest current streak in the ncaa (midwestern state, 19).

concordia racked up six if its team blocks in the first game alone, frustrating dragon hitters to a .108 hitting average. sadie kessler got the team fired up with two solo roofs to go along with three kills in five attempts. raina hein tallied four kills with a solo block and block assist each in the first set.

msu moorhead came back firing in the second set and challenged the golden bears in a much closer 25-21 contest. They fired back at concordia with strong hits of their own and posted 14 kills with a .364 average. Concordia had to battle back to take the lead midway through the set. Once they regained the advantage, however, they stayed poised for the win.

the golden bears committed only three errors at the net in the final set and ran away to a 25-13 win. Three players went into double figures for kills and four players reached the ten or more digs. Kessler and whitney meierotto each posted double doubles, kessler with ten kills and digs each and meierotto with ten kills and 11 digs. mary slinger doubled her dig total to 16 in the final set to lead all players in the column. rachel knutsen added 11 digs. emily palkert emerged as the leading hitter with 13 kills and a .500 average. She had a solo block and two block assists.

maggie mcnamara added 46 assists to her week's total for an average of 15.33 per set in the match. Throughout the three matches on the week, mcnamara averaged a jaw dropping 14.00 assists per game with a grand total of 126 overall. Against the dragons, she also had six digs and two block assists. Her squad hit .382 with 50 kills and 61 digs en route to their 17th straight win.

the dragons of msu moorhead hit .171 on the evening with 35 digs and three blocks. The leading hitter was cathy turner with nine kills. The only player to go into double figures on defense was calla oftedahl with ten digs. The team's main setter had 19 assists.

concordia resumes play at the gangelhoff this tuesday evening, hosting wayne state at 7:00 pm.
