Golden Bears escape Seawolves chase

st. Paul, minn. - concordia's volleyball team overcame a seawolves attack in closing match of the 2008 cu radisson-roseville tournament. The golden bears played several close games and even gave up a set to alaska-anchorage, who surprised many teams with their strong play this weekend. Concordia improved to 11-1 overall with the 3-1 win, 25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 25-18. Cu's emily palkert once again dominated the front row, pounding the leather for 17 kills as the game's leading hitter.

maggie mcnamara kept the barrage of assists coming against alaska-anchorage, finishing the match with 52 sets. She also had eight digs, two serving aces and a solo block. whitney meierotto marked a double double with 13 kills and a team high 17 digs. sadie kessler was a force from the hitting line as well, swinging for a .542 average with 13 kills and eight digs. maria steinhagen was the final golden bear with double figures in hitting, finishing with ten. The golden bears hit .318 with 64 digs and six serving aces.

the seawolves gave the home team a run for their money throughout much of the match, but most significantly in the second game. Uaa tore out to a 6-0 lead and never gave up the advantage. The golden bears struggled hitting and only got to within three points just before the visitors took the 25-21 lead. They hit .375 with 15 kills and held cu to .200 hitting.

the golden bears woke from their slumber and took the next two games for the win, setting their weekend record at 4-0 and lenthening their winning streak to 11 games. Throughout the four games played this weekend, mcnamara averaged 14.00 assists and 2.29 digs per game. Palkert had 62 kills throughout the tournament, averaging 4.43 per game with a .417 hitting average. Kessler ripped out a .380 average with 38 kills. She also had five serving aces.

the golden bears open nsic play on tuesday, hosting upper iowa at 7:00 pm.
