Junior right handed pitcher
jake schmidt (oakdale, minn.) struck out eight batters to improve to 6-0 on the season as concordia university (23-13, 15-9 nsic) won game one 12-1 over northern state (14-27, 10-20 nsic). But the golden bears were unable to hold two separate three run leads in game two as the wolves defeated cu 10-7 despite four golden bear home runs on saturday afternoon at barnes field.
cu hit nine home runs in the doubleheader, led by junior catcher
chris herbert (white bear lake, minn.) who had three giving him 11 on the season.
game one: cu 12, northern state 1jake schmidt dominated the wolves, scattering five hits and a walk over six innings, lowering his era to 3.05 as he allowed one earned run.
the eight strikeouts give him 78 for the season, tying dave johnson's 1995 single season record. The win was his first in three starts dating back to april 5 when he struck out 13 against u-mary.
the offense wasted no time solidifying the lead for schmidt, as senior
joe abellera (minnetonka, minn.) led off the bottom of the first with a solo shot to center. Senior
john maciej (elk river, minn.) added a three run homer to left center with one out in the inning to put cu ahead 4-0.
maciej's three run shot put him at 40 rbi for the season, second on the team and in the top five of the nsic.
abellera hit another home run, a two run shot in the fourth, and tagged a double and scored in the second. He was 3-4 scoring four times and driving in three in the first game. He has 14 doubles and 12 home runs and raised his season average to .411 with a 4-7 performance in the doubleheader.
in the second inning, junior
brenden furrow (johnston, iowa) tagged a two run shot to center to cap a three run inning, giving concordia a commanding 7-0 lead after two.
furrow would go 4-4 with his 12th double and his ninth home run and four rbi in the first game. He finished the doubleheader with seven hits in eight at bats, raising his average to .451. He has 10 home runs and 46 rbi on the year as well.
schmidt's only blemish came in the third inning when andrew lunsetter delivered an rbi double scoring payton mccleary.
in the fourth,
chris herbert hit his ninth home run two batters after abellera's two run shot.
game two: northern state 10, cu 7the offense stayed hot in game two, with senior
jake waldman (minnetonka, minn.) drilling an opposite field home run to right center in the first while
brenden furrow popped his tenth homer to right later in the inning. Both were solo home runs, however, but gave cu a 2-0 lead.
in the second inning, concordia extended the lead to three runs with junior
ted farni's (minnetonka, minn.) rbi double to centerfield.
northern state finally got the offense going in the second after sophomore
blake devries (eden prairie, minn.) struck out three batters in the first two innings.
the wolves batted all nine hitters in the third and scored three runs, but devries forced nsu to strand the bases loaded.
he struck out two more in the inning en route to recording nine strikeouts in five innings.
concordia reclaimed the lead for devries in the bottom of the inning on junior
chris kimpton's (canberra, australia) sacrifice fly to right field, scoring furrow.
chris herbert belted his first home run of the game, second of the day, a two run shot to centerfield, in the fourth inning to re-open the lead back to three runs, 6-3 after four innings.
the wolves put runners in scoring position against devries in first, third, fourth and fifth innings but only managed runs in the third as devries used his arm to pitch out of jams, registering nine strikeouts in the first five innings.
he started the sixth and the wolves' back-to-back singles to start the inning chased devries from the game with a 6-3 lead.
junior left handed relief specialist
kirk ingram (woodbury, minn.) came out of the bullpen and allowed a three run home run just over the right centerfield fence to tie the score. He allowed another two run home run to the exact same spot three batters later with one out, giving nsu their first lead of the series, 8-6.
ingram pitched out of the inning without allowing anymore damage.
in the bottom of the sixth,
joe abellera led off with a walk, but for the second time in the game he was picked off by nsu left handed starting pitcher brock pashen. He was also picked off in the first inning before waldman's solo home run.
just like in the first inning, the pickoff would once again prove costly as herbert delivered his third home run of the day, and the second of the game two batters later with no one on.
the herbert home run pulled concordia within a run, 8-7. Herbert went 3-7 in the two games, scoring five runs while driving in four.
in the seventh inning, freshman
nick anderson (plymouth, minn.) entered the game and surrendered two unearned runs to the wolves.
the golden bears went down 1-2-3 in the seventh as they split their third straight doubleheader.
in the second game, concordia stranded six runners on base while allowing nsu 15 hits, five for extra bases.
devries did not factor into the decision for the first time all season. He had won his last four starts. He allowed five earned runs, nine hits and three walks in five innings, striking out nine.
ingram took the loss, falling to 2-2. Three runs were charged to ingram, who let in two of devries' runs after entering.
pashen got the win, improving to 2-7. He pitched a complete game despite allowing seven runs on 13 hits. He struck out four and walked two.
