Concordia wins two of three on day one of nsic north crossover

Concordia university (20-15, 9-3 nsic) won two of three games on the first day of the second nsic crossover held in bismarck, n.d. They defeated msu moorhead 5-3, fell 3-0 to u-mary and defeated bemidji state 5-0. Sophomore abby brundidge's (nekoosa, wi) hitting streak stopped at 17 games after hitting safely in the first two games.

game one: cu 5, msu moorhead 3
concordia had two comebacks in a back-and-forth battle against the dragons, coming out on top in the end. Msum scored first in the second inning to take the early lead.

in the third, senior nicole tischler (st. Paul, mn) drove in junior natalie mast (oakdale, mn) with a two out single to tie the score.

concordia took their first lead in the fourth when sophomore anna bjorlin (hermantown, mn) scored on sophomore nikki scherr's (stewartville, mn) single but the golden bears stranded the bases loaded in the inning.

msu moorhead scored a pair in the fifth inning to reclaim the lead, 3-2, forcing freshman starting pitcher cassye mcmahon (rescue, ca) from the contest. Freshman stephanie schmikla (madison, wi) relieved mcmahon, allowing an rbi single to score one of her base runners before retiring the side.

in the sixth, bjorlin led off with a hit by pitch, forcing starter kari sagehorn from the game. With reliever julie vancura in the circle, concordia rallied for three runs, with mast providing the only rbi on a single. The other two runs were unearned.

schmikla picked up the win, pitching 2.2 innings of shutout ball in relief, allowing three hits and striking out three to improve to 8-7.

vancura took the loss for the dragons.

abby brundidge went 2-4 in the game, extending her hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the first inning.

game two: u-mary 3, cu 0
abby brundidge singled in the first inning for the second game in a row, extending her hitting streak to 17, but it was just one of two hits for concordia as brenda langston controlled the game with a two hit shutout, striking out five without issuing any walks for the marauder win.

stephanie schmikla took the loss, falling to 8-8 with a complete game, six innings with three runs (one earned). She gave up six hits and struck out four.

u-mary scored two in the third and one in the fifth to seal the win.

nicole tischler had the only other hit for concordia, a leadoff single in the fourth inning.

cu is now 1-2 against u-mary on the year, splitting their two nsic games with a 7-6 non-conference loss to open the season.

game three: cu 5, bemidji state 0
this time it was concordia that shut down their opponent, as sophomore jenn kaminski (columbia heights, mn) hurled a two hit gem. She didn't have any walks or strikeouts as the concordia defense played well behind her.

kaminski moves to 8-4 with the victory.
