On the second day of their four game series, Concordia University (4-3) split with Wheeling Jesuit, taking the first game 15-4 before a 9-2 loss in the second game.
Joe Abellera fell short of the cycle by just a single, going 3-5 with a double, triple and home run while knocking in five runs and scoring three more for CU.
Game One:
Three sixth inning home runs led to an eight run inning to provide the Golden Bears with the insurance runs they needed in the 11 run victory.
Playing as the home team, Concordia fell into an early hole as
Derek Mason allowed four first inning runs thanks to a pair of two run home runs in the inning.
The Golden Bears got one back in the bottom of the inning, though, when
Brenden Furrow drilled an rbi double to right to score
Chris Herbert, who reached the previous at bat on a single to left.
But Concordia stranded runners on first and second in the second inning and left Herbert on first after a one out single in the third.
Meanwhile, Mason settled down after the rocky start, stranding a two out single in the second and getting out of a first and third jam with no outs in the third inning.
Mason retired the last two batters of the third inning to get out of the jam, and no one would reach against him the rest of the game, as he finished up his outing by recording 14 outs in a row, using three strikeouts in the process - two coming in the seventh inning.
In the fourth inning, Concordia chipped away at the 4-1 Wheeling Jesuit lead when Abellera smoked a two-run double to right centerfield with two outs, cutting the lead to one, 4-3 after four innings after Mason retired the side of the order in the top half of the inning.
In the fifth, Herbert led off the inning with a strikeout. Furrow followed by drawing a hit by pitch to start the rally. A single by
Zane Froelich set up an rbi single by
John Maciej and an rbi double by
 Jake Schmidt.
With runners on second and third with one out,
Blake Devries delivered a two-run single to center before
Jon Stockton's double play ended the inning.
But the four runs gave Concordia a 7-4 lead and with Mason cruising on the mound, it was all they needed. Mason worked the complete game, allowing just the four runs on six hits with just one walk and five strikeouts.
The offense wasn't done, though, as Concordia lit up the Wheeling Jesuit pitching staff for eight runs in the sixth inning behind a two-run home run by
Jake Waldman, knocking in Abellera who led off with a triple. Herbert followed Waldman with back-to-back home runs, Devries added his second two-run single and Abellera smashed a three-run home run to conclude the scoring.
Game Two:
Wheeling Jesuit again took the early lead, scoring one in the bottom of the first. Concordia tied the score in the third inning on
Zane Froelich's sacrifice fly, scoring
 Joe Abellera.
But WJUÂ reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third with two more runs, chasing starter
Nick Anderson from the contest in his first start at CU, allowing three runs in three innings on five hits and a walk.
Concordia didn't add their second run until they were already in a 9-1 hole in the top of the sixth inning.
Jake Waldman finished 2-4 at the plate while
Jake Schmidt was 2-2 with a walk and a run to give Concordia their only multi-hit efforts.
Steven King pitched a shutout inning, striking out one while
Bryan Bach finished the game, coming in to record the final out.
Concordia closes out their spring trip in Ft. Myers tomorrow when they face Stonehill at 4 p.m.
