Golden Bears conclude spring trip with 10-run victory

Concordia University (5-3) capped off their spring trip in Ft. Myers, Fla. With a 15-5 victory over Stonehill College on Friday afternoon in a nine inning single game. Joe Abellera continued his torrid hitting, going 4-5 with a home run and two rbi while Kirk Ingram picked up the win in relief, working 4.1 innings of shutout ball to slow down the Stonehill bats.

The Golden Bears jumped out to an early four run lead in the bottom of the first inning, manufacturing the runs without an extra base hit in the inning, drawing two walks, a hit by pitch and producing three singles.

Stonehill rallied for three runs in the top of the third to cut the gap to one run. Concordia responded in the bottom of the inning for a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Stonehill added two more runs, tying the score at five. Three of their five runs came across as unearned runs, however.

In the bottom of the fourth, Blake Devries delivered a triple to right field with one out from the nine-spot in the order and was followed by Abellera who drilled a two run home run to left centerfield, reclaiming the lead for Concordia, 7-5.

Chris Kimpton, who started on the hill for cu, was unable to pitch out of the fifth inning. After getting the first two outs of the inning, he gave up a single through the right side and was removed from the game leading 7-5.

Ingram came out of the bullpen and issued a walk to his first batter before registering a strikeout to retire the side, ending the Stonehill threat.

Concordia added a run in the eighth and five more in the ninth to provide Ingram with all the insurance runs he needed to secure the victory.

Ingram finished 4.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks.

Zane Froelich was 3-4 at the plate with three rbi and two doubles and two runs. Brenden Furrow scored four runs, going 1-4 and driving in a run. Jake Scmidt was 1-3 with three rbi as well.

With their spring trip in sunny Florida complete, Concordia will return to snowy Minnesota and will play Minnesota State University, Mankato on March 4 at the Metrodome at 5 p.m.
