Concordia University (3-2) picked up a pair of wins today to jump above .500 on the young season behind a 22-1 offensive explosion in game one before a 6-0 pitching gem in game two in a sweep of Wheeling Jesuit university at Terry Park in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Game One:
After a two run first inning thanks to
Chris Herbert's rbi triple and
Brenden Furrow's run scoring single, the Golden Bears ignited for a nine run second inning to claim an 11-0 lead.
The outburst included two-run doubles by Herbert and
Joe Abellera while
Derek Mason added a two-run single. Concordia sent 14 batters to the plate and all but furrow reached base in the inning.
All nine Golden Bear starters scored at least once with six of them scoring at least twice and all but the ninth batter,
Blake Devries, had an rbi in the contest.
Herbert had his best offensive effort in his young cu career, going 5-6 with six rbi and three runs scored while mashing two doubles and a triple. Abellera and Mason each had three hit, three rbi performances as well.
On the mound,
Ted Farni earned his first win of the year, pitching six innings, allowing one run on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts.
Ryan Fixell pitched a perfect seventh inning to finish off WJU.
Concordia had 20 hits and 10 walks as a team and did not commit any errors in the field.
Game Two:
Senior
Eric Utoft set the tone early, striking out the leadoff batter for wju before plowing through the first with just one base runner, forcing a pair of ground outs to retire the side.
Brenden Furrow delivered a run scoring single in the bottom of the first and
John Maciej followed two batters later with a sacrifice fly to center to give Concordia a 2-0 lead after one.
That was all Utoft needed as he put his left handed delivery in cruise control, pitching six innings of one-hit, shutout ball to lead the Golden Bears to victory. He walked just one batter and struck out seven of the 21 batters he faced in the masterpiece outing.
Jake Schmidt worked a 1-2-3 seventh with one strikeout.
Joe Abellera,
Jake Waldman and Furrow had all six of Concordia hits in the game, each producing two.
Abellera's triple was the only extra base hit for CUÂ in the game, but the Golden Bears manufactured their runs using patience. They drew eight walks with four of Concordia's six runs coming on runners who scored after drawing a walk at the plate.
After scoring two in the first, the golden bears scored two more in the second and two in the fourth to put Wheeling Jesuit away.
Concordia and Wheeling Jesuit square off in another doubleheader tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
