Concordia university (10-7, 4-4 nsic) led from coast-to-coast in a decisive 83-58 victory at wayne state college (9-8, 4-4 nsic) on friday evening at rice auditorium in wayne, neb. The golden bears, who were led by
matt cadwell (jr., g, st. Paul, minn.) with 24 points and
james metcalf (sr., g, killeen, texas) with 21 points and 11 rebounds, defeated the wildcats for the fifth straight time.
freshman forward
matt hackl (seymour, wis.) drained a three-pointer on concordia's second possession of the game to break a scoreless tie and the golden bears never looked back.
after the wildcats cut the deficit to three, 18-15 at the 13:08 mark of the first half, cadwell responded by hitting back-to-back three-pointers while
mike cunningham (so., g, minneapolis, minn.),
chris pfeiffer (fr., f, hopkins, minn.) and metcalf all added jumpers during a 12-0 concordia run that spanned just over seven minutes.
the run doubled-up the score on the wildcats, 30-15 and the golden bears stormed into the locker room ahead 39-25 at the break.
wayne state was only able to get the score into single-digits twice in the second half, 45-36 at the 16:19 mark and 48-39 at 15:01.
from there, concordia continued to open up their lead, using an 8-0 run, springing the lead from 59-47 with 9:10 to play to 67-47 after metcalf's lay-up with 7:32 to play.
the lead swelled as high as 29 points, 82-53 when cadwell hit his fourth three-pointer of the evening.
metcalf's double-double was concordia's second double-double of the year and the first of his career. He was 9-15 from the field and 3-5 from three-point distance.
cadwell, who came off the bench for the first time this year, finished 9-16 from the field, 4-7 from three-point range and 2-2 at the line in 25 minutes.
two golden bears combined for 16 of the team's 21 assists. Sophomore guard mike cunningham (minneapolis, minn.) had seven assists from the starting lineup while senior guard
jason birr (burnsville, minn.) dished a career-high and a team season high nine assists, had three steals and three offensive rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench.
the duo committed just two turnovers (cunningham 2, birr 0) while the team committed seven total turnovers and forced 14 wildcat blunders which led to a 16-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
concordia also capitalized on the offensive glass, turning 10 offensive rebounds into 19 points while the wildcats scored just two points on their seven offensive rebounds.
cadwell's 24 points off the bench spurred a 37-10 deficit in bench production, as
chuol chany (sr., c, des moines, iowa) added seven points as well.
it was a fine shooting production by concordia, who shot 51.6% (32-62)from the field, 40.9% (9-22) from three-point range and 71.4% (10-14) at the free throw line.
meanwhile they held wayne state to under 40.0% shooting from the field and three-point distance and they shot under 70.0% at the line.
sophomore forward
craig heiman (marshall, wis.) was concordia's third player to reach double-figures with 10 points on 3-8 shooting and 4-4 free throw shooting, despite 0-3 shooting from behind the arc.
freshman center
drew votis (peshtigo, wis.) had nine points on 4-5 shooting in 14 minutes of work.
wayne state had four players in double-figures led by matt rathje's 13 points.
