Cadwell reaches 1,000 in loss to #4 winona state

Junior guard matt cadwell (st. Paul, minn./south dakota state) went over 1,000 career points but the golden bears did not have an answer for the warriors' all-american, john smith who finished with 29 points to lead #4 winona state (18-1, 7-0 nsic) to a 93-55 win over concordia university (9-7, 3-4 nsic) on saturday evening in front of 2,501 fans at the gangelhoff center.

the golden bears never led in the contest but did force two ties, the second tie coming when cadwell's three-pointer knotted the score at five with the significance of the three-pointer catapulting him over 1,000 for his career.

cadwell has 1,006 in his three collegiate seasons, including two seasons at div. I south dakota state before transferring to cu prior to this season. He finished with seven points and five assists.

concordia was led by sophomore craig heiman (marshall, wis.) who had 14 points on 5-12 shooting, including 4-4 at the line.

freshman center drew votis (peshtigo, wis.) had his hands full defensively, but held his own recording five blocked shots while scoring six points and pulling in four rebounds.

senior guard james metcalf (killeen, texas) had eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, shooting 4-7 from the floor.

he was concordia's only player in double-figures.

the three strikes against the golden bears were: 1. Their inability to stop smith (29 pts in 28 min); 2. Three-point shooting (wsu 12-18, cu 4-13); and 3. Turnovers (cu 24, wsu 13).

smith, winona state's pre-season national player of the year, was 11-16 from the floor, 4-5 at the line and even stepped out for 3-3 from three-point range. He had four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 28 minutes.

the only other player in double-figures for winona state was brent riese, who had 10 points and four assists in 17 minutes off the bench.

winona state shot 57.6% (34-59) from the floor compared to 40.4% (21-52) for the golden bears.

concordia returns to the road next weekend when they travel to take on wayne state and southwest minnesota state on jan. 18-19.
