Concordia drops third in a row on homecoming

Concordia-st. Paul (1-3, 0-2 nsic) was outscored 20-0 in the second quarter as the university of mary (1-3, 1-1 nsic) defeated the golden bears 37-20 on saturday afternoon at griffin stadium in front of 2,376 fans on homecoming.

the home opener started off great for the bears, who jumped out to a 7-0 lead when jordan frain (sr., lb, treynor, iowa) returned a deflected pass 30 yards for a touchdown just under five minutes into the game.

the bears held strong in the first quarter, limiting u-mary to just three points despite the marauders having great field position.

u-mary's field goal came with :20 to play in the first quarter and started a string of 23 unanswered points over the next ten minutes of action to propel the marauders to a 23-7 lead going into halftime.

that difference would be too much for the bears to overcome as their running game struggled mightily for the third consecutive week.

in his first career collegiate start, kama johnson (r-fr., rb, brooklyn park, minn.) showed some positive flashes, rushing nine times for 35 yards including a long of 15. But concordia's inconsistency to open running lanes proved costly as the bears finished with -9 yards rushing on 26 rushing attempts as a team.

the passing game got moving in the second half and finished strong as kole goodchild (sr., qb, west bend, iowa) completed a school-record 29 passes in 51 attempts for 248 yards and a touchdown. He also threw two interceptions, lost a fumble and was sacked six times in the contest.

calvin simon (r-fr., wr, shakopee, minn.) had his second 100-yard receiving game in three weeks, hauling in career-highs of six receptions for 130 yards including a 40 yarder. antwon williams (sr., wr, key west, fla.) and charlie johnston (jr., wr, aberdeen, s.d.) each had seven catches for 41 yards while tyrone ruffin (jr., wr, wayzata, minn.) had four receptions for 28 yards and his fourth touchdown of the season.

special teams hurt concordia once again as stephan bjerke was 0-3 on field goal attempts from 40, 46 and 38 yards. His 38 yarder was blocked while one of his other kicks was partially blocked.

the marauders were led by erik kruse and bayland rippenkroeger who each scored twice. Kruse had nine catches for 104 yards while rippenkroeger carried 24 times for 85 yards.

blair sandy directed the offense and completed 21-37 for 186 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

dario moore (jr., db, st. Paul, minn.) had concordia's second interception after frain returned the first for a 30 yard touchdown. Moore had a team-high 10 tackles (eight solo) and a pass breakup. He now has interceptions in consecutive weeks after moving to defensive back after the second week. Moore also returned a pair of kicks for 57 yards including a season-long 35 yarder.

frain also recorded six tackles (five solo), had a sack, 3.5 tackles for loss, forced a fumble and had a pass breakup.

tim oachs (jr., dl, mankato, minn.) had a breakthrough effort with a two sack performance, making six tackles (three solo) with two tackles for loss. He also returned three kicks for 28 yards.

duy huynh (jr., lb, apple valley, minn.) also had a solid individual effort on defense with eight tackles (four solo) and a 30 yard fumble recovery returned for a touchdown to start the second half.

the bears had 11 tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery while scoring two defensive touchdowns in a solid effort despite the 37 points allowed.

concordia returns to action next saturday, september 29 when they travel to take on winona state at 1:00 p.m. For the warrior's homecoming.
