Concordia university (26-29, 10-8 nsic) drew a split at upper iowa university (18-30, 10-8 nsic), dropping the first game 3-2 before a 9-4 win in the second game on tuesday afternoon in fayette, iowa.
in the first game, the peacocks and bears were scoreless through the first three, though concordia had their chances, stranding two runners on base in the first, second and third innings.
the peacocks finally made the bears pay when kami appelt drilled a three run home run of mandy turba to give uiu the first lead, 3-0.
concordia finally scored in the sixth inning. tiffani rodd reached on an error by the second baseman and advanced to second when natalie mast walked, giving cu runners on first and second, again. nicole tischler laid down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, moving rodd and mast up a base. After a nikki scherr strikeout, the bears had second and third with two outs for anna bjorlin. Bjorlin hit a ball to first that went between her legs and into right field, scoring a pair of runs for the bears.
concordia would not be able to mount a rally in the seventh, however as they went down 1-2-3 to end the game.
turba was hit with the loss, falling to 14-17 despite a complete game, five hit effort. All three of the runs against her were earned and she struck out two and walked one.
concordia left nine runners on base in the game and were unable to capitalize on five peacock errors.
in the second game, bjorlin's bat caught fire as she went 4-5 with six rbi. She hit her 13th double and stole her 10th base in the process.
mallory olson and mast each produced two hit games as well with m.olson going 2-4 with two runs and mast going 2-3 with three runs, an rbi, her eighth double and school record 27th stolen base. Tischler was 0-2 but scored three runs and stole her 10th base.
concordia had nine hits and walked six times in the offensive onslaught. They scored four in the second and three in the third to take a 7-0 lead before uiu finally scored in the bottom of the third.
turba picked up the win to improve to 15-17. She allowed 10 hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out two as she pitched back-to-back complete games.
the bears close out the regular season with a 26-29 overall record and finished 10-8 in the northern sun in a three way tie for fourth place with upper iowa and the university of mary (n.d.). The peacocks have the fourth seed based on tiebreakers. Concordia will have the fifth seed while u-mary is not eligible for the nsic tournament in 2007.
