Concordia university (27-29) advanced to the second round of the nsic tournament on friday afternoon with a 6-3 win over upper iowa in marshall, minn. The fifth-seeded golden bears pulled off the only upset of the first round by defeating the fourth-seeded peacocks and will advance to take on the host and top seed, sw minnesota state later this afternoon.
concordia scored one in the first when
abby brundidge delivered an rbi single up the middle, scoring
anna bjorlin from second base with runners on first and second. Bjorlin would smoke a two run double to centerfield in the second inning to put the bears ahead 3-0 after two.
in the fourth inning,
natalie mast's base running prowess turned into a run. After a one out single through the right side, mast swiped second, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a throwing error by the right fielder. Bjorlin added another rbi base hit to right field in the inning scoring
nicole tischler for the second time to give the bears a commanding 5-0 lead.
upper iowa scored one in the bottom of the inning but concordia added another in the fifth when mast singled home
mallory olson. The peacocks picked up two more runs in the seventh but couldn't keep their rally going with runners on first and second and one out.
mandy turba improves to 16-17 with the victory, hurling a complete game. She allowed three runs while scattering 10 hits and striking out three.
bjorlin finished 2-3 with a double, three rbi and a run. Mast added a 3-4 effort while stealing two more bases along with a run and an rbi. Tischler was also 2-3 with two runs.
concordia's game against sw minnesota state is scheduled for a 4:00 start this afternoon, however that could change pending weather conditions in western minnesota.
