Bears drop two more at Wayne State

Concordia University (18-10, 6-6 NSIC) was unable to slow down the Wayne State (30-11, 20-4 NSIC) bats on the road as the Wildcats defeated the Golden Bears 9-5 and 13-1 to complete a four game sweep on Saturday afternoon in Wayne, Neb.

keeping up with the trend they set in the first two games of the series, the Wildcats scored in all six innings they were up to bat against the Bears in the first game, putting up a run in the first and two more in the second and third innings to take a 5-0 lead.

Concordia got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth but Wayne State continued their strong offensive output scoring a run in each inning before adding two more in the sixth.

Jake Schmidt pitched a complete game, taking the loss to fall to 2-3 on the year. He allowed nine runs on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the defeat.

Concordia stranded nine runners on base and racked up 11 hits and three walks at the plate. Matt Borman, Brenden Furrow and John Maciej all went 2-4 while Tony Boxwell added a 2-3 performance. Derek Mason was 1-3 with a pair of rbi.

In game two, Wayne State scored in five of their six times up to bat, bringing the series total to at least one run in 21 of the 24 innings between the two teams.

The Wildcats scored three in the first to take a quick lead but were shutout in the second.

Jake Waldman drilled a solo homer down the left field line in the third inning, his seventh home run of the season.

But that was all Concordia would manage to score against Wayne State despite scattering seven hits. The Bears stranded five more runners in the second game and were unable to manufacture a run in their fourth straight loss.

Boxwell had a solid second game with a 3-3 effort at the plate, going 5-6 in the two games.

Eric Utoft was hit with the loss bringing his season record to 2-2 after pitching 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits. He struck out three and didn't issue any walks.

The Bears look to recover from their four game skid when they travel to take on Winona State on Wednesday, April 25 at 2:00.
