Concordia University (20-10, 8-6 NSIC) snapped a four game road skid with a pair of wins at Winona State University (22-13, 15-5 NSIC), defeating the Warriors 4-1 and 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Winona, Minn.
Pitching was the key as the Bears starters were lights out. In the first game,
Matt Borman went seven strong, allowing two hits and one run with a walk and three strikeouts to move to 6-1 on the season. Borman also helped his own case at the plate, going 2-4 with a two run double down the right field line in the sixth inning which gave the Bears a 4-1 lead.
Borman took a one hit shutout into the seventh when he allowed a leadoff double. The runner came around to score after a pair of ground outs to second base.
Greg Winegarden drove in the other two runs on an rbi ground out in the second and an rbi single in the fourth.
Jake Schmidt took the ball in the second game and was in command with a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts. He allowed three hits and two walks in the game, improving to 3-3 with the victory.
At one point in the game, Schmidt retired 11 consecutive Warrior hitters.
Borman once again stepped up at the plate, going 2-3 drilling his sixth homer, a two-run shot to right he also scored three runs and stole his eighth base.
Mason Reinhart also had a pair of rbi on a two run single to center in the first.
The Golden Bears picked up a pair of key victories as they continue to jockey for position to compete in the NSICÂ Tournament. This weekend they hit the road for four key games in a series at Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D.
